Been reading a while on here, finally registered.  I need some help determining the origin (I know, colt) of an M16A1 marked lower. Not US gov property marked, no restricted (ban) markings. Few locals say it must have been an export gun that found its way back. Marked for safe/fire/auto with correct safety. No 3rd pin hole and the floor isn’t machined for the fa sear. Has the remnants of a rack number and proper A1 short butt. It is a 5 million serial. I’m trying to figure out how to insert a picture, any help?

Postimage.org will allow you to post pics.. just copy & paste the direct link here

From what you said seems like someone welded an export m16a1 magwell to a semiauto receiver… just a guess

I'm no expert here, but it seems to me that the upper and lower didn't start life together.

Not a real Colt lower.

Markings are engraved instead of rollmarked.
Also the cerro forge markings in the trigger guard area should not be present.. that’s a modern era lower

There was a guy a while back on one of the suppressor forums I belong to that was CNC or Laser engraving 80% lowers.  Looks Like one of his.  I warned him of copyright infringement.  His posts disappeared.

Yep, it’s not even remotely real. Markings are wrong in multiple ways not to mention the lower itself. It may have been etched by the looks of some places. It’s just a parts kit build.

Interesting the wide variety of opinions on this. Anywhere I could take this to be assessed in person a reasonable distance from Panama City Fl? My local military firearms and mg guy had a look, disassembled it and said it was legit…

If it was a real COTS M16A1 it would have an auto sear hole and be a machine gun.

To my knowledge the only “clones” that Colt did were the Vietnam reissues and that’s not one or close. It’s an 80% lower someone did to use on a parts kit. It doesn’t appear to even be anodized. The rest of the rifle may be legit but the lower is 10000000% not.

That’s how a real M16A1 lower should look.
Right side has the full mag fence.
