Most rifle ammo comes 20 rounds per box.
Most pistol ammo comes 50 rounds per box.

Why?

Who is responsible for these arbitraty numbers?
And why did they choose 50 for pistol and 20 for rifle?

Why can’t we have the same round count boxes for simplicity?

Are the British responsible?

Was there a gentlemen’s agreement in the 1800s I was not aware of.

I need answers now.

Entirely explainable. The product of an angry Serb.

In some small way an act of rebellion.

I’m gonna guess it has to do with the mass/weight disparity of pistol vs rifle to have uniformish box sizes for the shelves

Because I want uniformity.

And I want to know who is responsible.

Did somebody say “I want to kill x number or people, that should take 20 rifle cartridges, or 50 pistol cartridges. So pack these rifle cartridges 20 per box and these pistol cartridges 50 per box”

It's because the first rifle- the AR-10 - and the first pistol - the first handgun - the keltec p50- held those number of rounds respectively.

Or it was the general price per round for each. Who knows?

The proper number of rounds per box should be 87.

I am open to the fact this may be the ideal number.
But our ammo overlords have a different opinion.

Go ask your dad. When my dad grew up in the forties they bought single shotgun rounds and single 22 rounds. Magazine capacity wasn't a thing considered until the eighties in large numbers.  People haven't always had the means to buy vast quantities of ammo.

Dunno about pistol, but the average Fudd probably shoots about 20 rounds every 4 years or so.....3 shots per year to sight in on the paper plate, and 2 shots per year at deer grazing at night...

50 rounds in a box of 223 doesn't sound like such a bad idea.  50 rounds in a box of 300 win mag sounds like dumb idea.

Then the Fudds would be bitching about how that's a lifetime supply, and how they only need one round per hunting season, and why should they buy so much ammo?

Not a commercial production but a military production but I always liked how the 7.62x25 ammo was packaged into 7 round wax paper inside the box because the Tokarev pistol held 7 rounds and when they created the ppsh-43 they had 35 round stick mags. The ppsh-41 had a 71 round drum mag but I wonder if the goal was 70.

For a lot of Fudds, 20 rounds last a couple of years.  Why would they want to buy more?

It might really blow your mind to know that German WW2 9mm boxes were 32 rounds

(Because the Luger and P38 have 8 round mags and the MP40 has a 32 round mag)

one of the ammo manufacturers used to sell the "pocket pack" of 5 rifle bullets... i. shit. you. not.

it was the ultimate Fudd pack, made just for people who went deer hunting once a year

kind of like the dozens of bow hunters I know who store their archery equipment every year at the local pawn shop

bow season is the hunting season for all the daddies who've had to go to prison

This.
And 50 round centerfire pistol boxes and 20 round .30cal rifle boxes are about the same size on the shelf.

Well, when you only had 1 tag and shot a deer the first day, you usually only hunted 1 day.
I only carry 5 rounds when deer hunting. If I can't get a deer, or 2 with 5 rounds, I need to go to the range and practice as I have no place out hunting.

Ever walk in the store and see the rifle and pistol boxes are not that differing in size? Now imagine a 50 round rifle box to match. And don't forget the price point of a 50 round rifle box compare to a 50 round pistol box.

Size & weight.... and so that people don't bawk at the price of 50x rounds of rifle ammo.

Let's ignore companies who do retardedly large packing. But 20 rounds of rifle is relatively compact, so is 50rds of handgun.

If you talk in terms of 5.56 and Nato it keeps both under $10 in a perfect world. IMI and the Turkish 556 being sold in 30rd boxes was perfect. But I don't really want 30rd boxes of .308 or 30-06.

Also I really think 5.56 in 20rd boxes was based on magazine capacity.  Vietnam m196 that hit the market a few years ago was in 20rd boxes. M14's had 20rd magazines too. Go back to WWII....  30-06 was in 20rd boxes. Perfect for a BAR and was still a big box. M1 Garand ammo came already in clips. I doubt commercial sales was the issue.

I asked Sam at SGAmmo why they didn't have IMI 5.56 in the 30 rnd boxes they originally came in. He said that US consumers have been conditioned to think in quantities of 20/50 per box and that the 30 rnd boxes sell much less than the 20 rnd boxes

20 round box= 4x 5-rd mags,5x 4-rd mags, 2x 10-rd mags, or 1x 20-round mag.  3x boxes = 2x 30-rd mags. Hell, 2x boxes = 5 Garand clips.   20 is a very good number for rifle boxes.

Pistol, well, that's 8 cylinders for a 6-shot revolver with two spares, or 10 for 5.  That's also 5x 10-round mags, or 7x 7-round mags with one spare, or 3x 15-rounders with 5 spares.
of those, the only one that would make sense to change the box size for is the 15 rounders.  But after you chamber one and top off, well, it's stupid to have a 46-round box.

Those sizes are good compromises when you don't know exactly how the ammo you're making is going to be used.

If it it makes you feel better, the French used to issue rifle ammo in multiples of 8 for their Lebels.
