I only have two, both Polish Vectors.  I'd sell the fixed stock version before the underfolder.

For a long time, my Romanian SAR 1 was my only AK. It has been a great rifle for more than 20 years. I've got a bunch more now though.

If I was buying in todays market: 5.56x45 FB Radom Polish Beryl, or Galil Ace.

Of what currently available new AKs are of quality and worth buying? I had an SAR and a MAK but lost both in Florence so thinking about replacing      A stereotypical looking commie AK to round out the collection, not a western variant.

true AK would be an AK-104; ishmash/saiga build probs.

AK derivative would be a SIG 553 fo sho

Steyr Maadi

AK perfection, well as close to original Russian AK looks as you can get

I have many Polytechs and Norinco's and Arsenals, but hands down that Steyr Maadi is just what an AK is supposed to look like.

+1 for the ZPAP M70. My biggest problem with it is I like it so much out of the box that I can't justify putting a Zhukov stock on it for the extra benefit of having it fold. Looks great, shoots great, and really clearly demonstrates the jump up in quality from the previous imported ones. Only thing I'd watch out for with these is making sure to get Yugo-specific furniture/accessory rails, but that just takes a little extra caution before you buy.

Archangel/hogue furniture by the way, only thing I added was a MI gen 2 optic rail to maybe try a prism sight or LPVO on it. The wood ones look nice too though!

If I had no AKs, I might get the ak-556 from PSA since it uses AR magazines.

I have tried most or all of the common original military stock variants, and many of the aftermarket ones as well.  I still prefer the original Russian/Bulgarian metal side folder from the AK-74 series as my favorite to shoot.  Have it on guns in 5.56, 5.45, and even a Romanian G kit build in 7.62 (Kyber Pass variant).

Underfolders look cool but suck to shoot.  Romanian sidefolders are OK, E German center mounted sidefolders are less so.  (Same for Polish). Fixed stocks are fine in general but a folder is nicer.  US made folders are OK but not authentic, US made collapsible AR style the same.

I really dislike the current plastic sidefolder stocks the Russian are putting out, just lame compared to the older metal version.

If I could only own one, it would be the Bulgarian 5.45 AK-74 sidefolder kit build though.  Just a great gun to shoot, handles well, peak Soviet era weaponry that is still in serious use today.

(An Arsenal SLR-106F is pretty much the same rifle but in 5.56, which is an easy to find ammo, but that rifle isn’t cheap or easy to find..)

But luckily I don’t have to choose just 1…

If I could only own 1 AK, I'd make it expensive one so when I Immediately dump it I can get the most money for it and buy something actually useful.

In fact, I did have just one AK in the end (after selling a WASR I bought for $350 sold for $700) and the last AK was a expensive one... a preban Norinco Type 56S-1 with matching kits and bayonet and everything.  I think I sold it for almost $2k.

Zastava from personal experience, and everything I hear about the real Polish AK's is positive.

Pick a caliber, OP, both make them in 7.62x39 and 5.56/.223. Remember, too, PSA will soon begin selling home made 7.62x39.

You guys who owned AK's 25 years ago are way behind the curve.

Thanks for all the responses. Some good info to think about for sure. The main reason I was going to stick with 7.62 was I have my VZ to feed anyway. So another 7.62 gun wouldn't hurt.  Sounds like Arsenals really aren't worth the money from what im seeing. Not that they aren't good guns. I think im going to checkout Zastava.

The underfolders look cool as hell. But the fixed stock models are so much more pleasant to shoot. But yeah my only AK is an underfolder.

I have a Maadi, Hungarian 63D, and a Polytech.

If I could only own one, it would be close between the Maadi, and Poly. I'm pretty sure I could never part with the Poly.

IWI Galil Ace in 5.56.

Or a PSAK 556.

Either would allow for use of AR mags and garbage steel case ammo, but I personally consider the ACE to be the pinnacle of AKs.  (That being said, they're still inferior to a nice PWS piston setup AR).

AK pricing is stupid and getting worse for a rifle that is not particularly nice or practical.

If you HAVE to have something imported with some cool factor, I'd go Zastava even though those are getting unbearable in price.

Personally, I think the PSA guns are a much better deal now than they ever were. They have a huge variety of grades and configuration, they're a company that stands behind their product, and you know you're going to have long term support which isn't something that can be said with confidence about any imported model.

I used to own a Vepr K in 7.62x39.  They are built on a beefier RPK receiver.   These things are heavy.  Super nice, but certainly not light.
