I ponder stuff like that a lot.  Some really incredible natural abilities out there to blend in.

Thank god they are incredibly timid for a viper. Because their camouflage is amazing.

That’s about the same image I saw when pulling weeds and got stung. I’ve always been careful where I put my hands growing up in E. Texas. If I’m grabbing items on the ground now I usually beat the ground around it pretty good before reaching. A copperhead sting is a joke compared to a cottonmouth or rattler envenomation.

The rattlesnake in my avatar was stret hed across a hiking trail. Perfect sun and shadow pattern.

If we hadn't been there looking for rattlesnakes we might have stepped on it.

I’m 2011 or so I was pulling weeds and was bitten by an adult copperhead. Never noticed him/her until it struck. I received a pretty good dose of venom in my fingers and spent the night at Erlanger Chattanooga. Three doses of CroFab ($7k a pop), and a shot of Dilaudid, and was released the next day around noon.

Right or wrong, I took the ded snek with me to the ER so they could ID it. I knew what it was. In my case, the venom induced swelling made it halfway up my arm before they decided to give me antivenin.

If they administer CroFab, you will be eating breakfast in bed, in your assigned room.

If you don’t want snakes around your home, remove mice habitat, and get outside cats. I don’t kill snakes unless they come in to my domain where they must be addressed. They serve a valuable purpose.

They blend in very well with their environment I got bit by one at Boy Scout summer camp when I was younger.  I got back to the campsite and noticed blood on my sock and when I pulled down my sock I had two puncture wounds.  I calmly went over and told the adults I had been bitten and several of them began to panic trying to figure out what to do.  My scout master a former Green Beret calmly and completely cool came up asked me a few questions having me focus on him explained exactly what was going to happen and proceeded to have me walk to his truck about the same time my dad arrived back at the site.  My dad and the scout master loaded up leaving everyone else behind and drove to the hospital.  That was a very interesting day I will say I learned that day who in a situation could remain cool and calm also who could not keep their head screwed on straight in a crisis.  I also learned a valuable less that I to this day remember how my scout master and dad were able to keep me from even worrying about having been bit by a snake.

I've been cutting down trees and doing forestry work for over a decade. Lot of time in the woods. I'm amazed how close you can accidentally get to one and they either slither away or do nothing.

A girl stepped on one at a field party back when we were in high school though and yeah, she got bit.

I've killed dozens and will kill every one I see without any hesitation or regrets.

My dogs were bitten so frequently that we kept injectable diphenhydramine hcl on hand.

They're a legit hazard when working in the woods.
