An ex who is still a really good friend has an 8th grade son who made honor roll. Was thinking about a monetary gift for the young man. How much is appropriate?

Not being grounded was my reward.

Buy him a rifle instead.

I never did money as a reward for good grades, but would sometimes do an ice cream or something like that.

My dad took me to the local arcade and gave me $20 in quarters to do as I pleased. Man, I forgot about that. Good times.

My parents took me to dinner until middle school. After that point it was an expectation with no rewards.

Nothing. Not your kid. If you insist, save up and give him something small for a graduation present.

$0, directly.
Good grades should be expected, not financially rewarded. Do something together that they like and frame it as being because of the grades. Fishing trip. Their favorite dinner. Something to acknowledge the achievement. Making money the reward for everything doesn't teach a good lesson. |

Give him a younger brother or sister.
Give that boy $10K for each A on the report card.
I’m sure with incentive like that he’ll turn out just fine. |
wait, an ex, so its not your kid?

I wanna say up till 6th grade, for my report card, I got $5 for every A, $1 for ever B, nothing for a C, grounded for a week for a D and im pretty sure instan-death for an F.
IDK; my kid is holding down a 4.4 GPA (on the 0 to 4 point scale) and we don’t pay her for that.
We have a house cleaner to clean our toilets twice a month. I’ve told my kids since they were toddlers: “get bad grades and you’ll end up cleaning someone else’s toilets.” They both got the message. |
My HS friends dad used to pay her $100 per A on her report card.
I was always told of $20 A’s and this was this 80’s!
But i failed to apply myself. But I did end up applying and teaching myself many different skills, but I had to find the right motivation and ways to learn. If No one else can motivate you, only you can! |

It was my job to do so. |

$10 per book. Chores and grades are expected.

View Quote I've let my kids know, from an early age, success or failure in life falls on them. Whether they get good grades or not will have no impact on my life, but will have a profound impact on theirs. Effort is what matters to me. As long as they are giving a good effort the grade is not relevant. Having said that, both my kids are A students and we generally have a small celebration at the end of each semester. |

I buy my kids stuff, usually smaller things. This year I've changed my mind, my son is getting a gaming PC. He scored 100 on of his state exams and is skipping a grade in math and english next year.
Nobody blinks at buying all kinds of shit for a kids birthday (congrats on being born?) but when they actually earn something they get an ice cream? Seems backward to me. |

I have a daughter and she gets $25 per A in core classes and AP electives, plus a $100 bonus for straight A’s. It gives her spending cash through the year, as school is her job. Tried to make it as close to real world as I can.

Good grades were expected in my house growing up and I have the same expectation from my kids, especially since I'm paying for their school. Paying for grades is a dumb idea that makes kids feel entitled.

I remember the local Burger King franchisee gave you a free Whopper if you brought your report card in with straight As.

Told mine I’d give em $30 for all A+ and $20 for straight A’s
I’m gonna bonus em with $40. YMMV |

Take him somewhere he can see the rewards of good education and hard work. Or some cool science place that allows visitors. Good grades should come as a byproduct of self-motivation.

I'm fortunate to have twin 15 year old boys who have consistently received honor and high honors since 5th grade.
I bring them out for a dinner as a reward. One is also a video gamer, so I get him a small $ amt PS gift card and the other one a starbucks card.... $20 bucks each. It's a well earned reward in my opinion. I'm tough on them academically and they perform. Performance should always equal a reward... even if just a small reward as a means of recognition |

$5000
$4500 goes into a college fund. The kid gets to spend $500 on something you approve of and likely would have bought him anyway but now he worked for it. (feel free to adjust that amount up or down but the key is that the boy feels like he's working towards college and ties his good grades to that long-time reward and the gratification he gets from the 10%) |
