I am putting together some field kits for emergency use.
There appears there are original US GI and newer ones, I assume made in china.  Are the newer ones useable? Thanks

The Made in China are trash, I owned a few
that I picked up cheap, and they had so many
issues that I threw them away.

I have several of the Otis kits.

They are worth it.

I think I have 15 of the kits like that. I keep them for handouts along with rifles. I need probably another 15 kits now that I think about it.

Otis and/or Pro Shot. For conventional sectional rods, Pro Shot (and their handle) is the best I've used.

The only value of the cheap USGI copies are their rods. Not as part of a cleaning kit, but just a couple sections taped, zip tied, or rubber banded to your handguards for an emergency rod to punch out broken brass or a severe jam. I think they're actually brass but with a subdued coating.

Buy a one piece coated rod from Dewey or similar source and a rod guide that slips in your upper.

The G.I. cleaning rod threading aren't a flush fit, allowing the steel rod to have contact with the bore, steel on steel when it flexes. The raised leading edges are not friendly to your bore.
