Bidenomics - Good guys pull out, Bad guys move in.

Russian military personnel have entered an air base in Niger that is hosting U.S. troops, a senior U.S. defense official told Reuters, a move that follows a decision by Niger's junta to expel U.S. forces from the country.
The military officers ruling the West African nation have told the U.S. to withdraw its nearly 1,000 military personnel from the country, which until a coup last year had been a key partner for Washington's fight against insurgents who have killed thousands of people and displaced millions more.

Good move Niger. Keeping that centuries long African winning streak intact!

Bet the Russians carry off the plumbing fixtures when it’s their turn to leave.

In case someone hasn’t been paying attention, the Russians and Chinese are winning (gaining ground) geopolitically.

Also, Biden keeps insulting allies.

The US is getting worked from multiple angles, while throwing away money and arms (stockpiles) in lost causes.

This base is a great example.  The US spent $100M+ to build this base.  Now that it's completed, the US is moving out, and the Russians are going to use it.

Essentially, the US built this base for the Russians to use.

I guess that's a good example of "leaving equipment behind" for the Russians I jokingly asked about.  We should bomb into dust on the way out.

Is Niger strategic? Serious question from a guy that doesn’t know. If it isn’t, then what difference does is make if the Russians get Niger? If it is, we can dome it if need be whenever we wish. What does the winner gain besides headlines here?

Africa is a money pit. Yeah they are there to get the minerals, but keeping the spice flowing is costly. We should pick our friends there carefully. And stick with them. Once they figure out the commies aren’t their saviors, Africa will do African stuff.

Sadly, the Russians will be able to claim success in preventing the slaughter of the remaining US personnel.  Great foreign policy for Putin, failure for Biden.  Africa is hard, and US weakness will be exploited.

Kinda.  Niger has lots and lots and lots of uranium which the French covet for their nuclear program.

This is actually a good thing for us because it frees up troops and gets us out of maintaining another far-flung base which doesn't have a clear strategic benefits to us.

I was posting about this last week in the “axis thread” but after posting the article earlier today in that thread I haven’t had time to follow up but the short version is Russia and China have pretty much moved into the Sahel replacing the French and US this doesn’t include Libya where Russia had moved into about the time they showed up in Syria.

Iran is also running ops in Africa too.

This might be why France is so pissed off at Russia now

It served its purpose--ensuring tax money goes to connected contractors and makes its way into the campaign funds of key politicians.

Yes, it is strategic.  And like I said in a different post the French would have cleaned house if we were not in the way.  US in the way (shit foreign policy) left a vacuum and a win for our adversaries.  FJB

I posted this in the “axis” thread awhile back. The Russians showed up in Libya about the time they arrived in Syria and ever since then they’ve increased ops in Africa, so has Iran and Turkey. Everyone already knows about China and France in Africa https://defence-blog.com/russia-increases-presence-in-africa/?amp

Back in summer/fall 2013-2014 I pushed DOD to pay attention to ISIS in Sirte about the time Al qaeda and the Islamic state started recruiting in Algeria, Tunisia, Libya for their forces in Syria and expanding presence into places like Sinai, Egypt.

France started Operation Barkhane in the summer of 2014

Russia has been doing very well in Africa.

They have Wagner head to weak states that have a tenuous grasp of their territory beyond the capital city. Then Wagner will deal brutally with the local opposition while offering training to the military.

They did this in The DPRC very successfully. In exchange Russia proxy/PMC will gets the rights to the gold mines in perpetuity which is usually okay with the government since they didn't have control over them to begin with.
