The area is growing fast, population is booming. It's getting very peopley.
With that said, Charleston is a great place for getting into history - lots of it here. As for outdoorsy stuff, there's salt & freshwater fishing. Lots of water, which would make having a boat worthwhile. The Francis Marion National Forest is nearby.
I used to do some hiking and camping when I lived in the hills of north central PA. When I got to Charleston (I was USAF) in 1986 I got a topographical map to see what the prospects of playing in the woods looked like. That map showed lots of swamp (they don't call it the Lowcountry for nothing). It may feel familiar, being from FL.
