I have several bolt action rifle builds in the pipeline and want to add fixed sights to at least one of them. I also have one rifle that will receive a receiver mounted sight with a barrel mounted front sight. Looks like I can either drill and tap the barrel for a pair of front and rear sight bases, or directly dovetail the barrel and add the sights that way. Which is the preferred way to do it? Also, how should I go about determining which height sights I need without trial and error?

That depends on the types of sights you want to use. A front sight with a band can be installed without drilling or tapping onto a cylindrical section of barrel. There are about as many options as sights.
Brownell's has a tutorial that will help you calculate the heights of the sights you'll want to install. |

It's not hard to design your own base and use a M14 front sight.
