Unfortuneately my understanding is the 6.8s meant as a 5.56 replacement.  In function, not logistics.
Where as the 7.62 picks up where 5.56 leaves off, ie. too heavy to carry 5.56 type quantity, especially when close in, its "overkill" if there is such a thing in combat situations, and it's fired from a platform heavier/larger than a 5.56, 6.8 will allow close to 5.56 type quantities of ammo to be carried.  It will fire effectively from the M16 size/wt. packages, and when 5.56 leaves you w/ your fingers crossed at longer ranges, 6.8 will fill the bill in all but the longest of shots.
Wait till there's polymer cased 6.8MM to really bring the wt. of the catridge down.

In short if you wanted to pack like you were carrying a 5.56AR, but wanted the range of the 7.62AR, then bring your new MRP, in 6.8MM w/ mags full of PolyCased rounds.

Just buy it, "you'll like it like Mikey"

Wave,

As background, I've got a 6.8SPC upper from MSTN (18"), a JP Enterprises-built AR-10, a couple FAL's, and of course a bunch of 5.56 AR's.

The best justification is that it packs almost as much punch as the 308, but fits in the light, compact AR15 format.  If you hunt, a nice little M4 can be your deer gun.   For SHTF, home defense, or duty, you can forget all the "Is 5.56mm Good Enough?" questions, but keep the AR15 platform.  A 115gr OTM or 110gr VMAX at 2650 - 2800fps will have superior terminal effects to M193 or M855.

Why not step up to the AR10?    Set your AR10 next to an AR15, note the size difference.  Note the weight difference.  Field strip both rifles and set the AR10 bolt carrier assembly next to the AR15 bolt carrier assembly.  Note that the AR10 assembly weighs at least 2x the AR15 assembly's weight.   The is a huge difference in reciprocating mass; it's that inertia that makes split times on the AR10 longer.

This chart compares the ballistics of various cartridges (5.56x45 OTM, 6.8x43, 6.5x39, 7.62x51) at ranges out to 1,000 yards.

As far as trajectory and wind drift the 6.8 is very similar to the 5.56 OTM, but with quite a bit more energy.

The 308 has a slightly better trajectory, but this would only have an effect at at longer ranges.  It has a lot more energy than the other two.

It seems like the 6.8 is an improvement to the 5.56 rather than a replacement for the 308.

So hell yes you should get one.

I'm intrigued by the 6.8mm SPC!

Are there mags, either standard or modified that will feed reliably?

Will ammo become more readily available?  $16.98 for a box of 20........when it can be found.

I'd love to put together an SPR or Varminter in 6.8mm!!!

6.8 is a smaller, lighter round that generates less uncomfortable recoil while providing greater long range penetration and excellent fragmentation even from short barrels such as the XM8's. This is good since the military has had some real short barrel envy recently. It also doesn't require anything besides a barrel and a bolt to switch from 5.56 ARs. It's a great compromise and also is a little less overkill if you are hunting small deer or whatever. Finally, despite its larger size than the 5.56, the increase in the amount of magazine space is negligible compared to the difference between a 5.56 and a 7.62 NATO. Another nice additive is that you don't need a brand new shell holder, it works off of the .30 Remington's holder. Finally, wear and tear on the barrel will be reduced and accordingly barrel life will increase because it doesn't generate as high pressures as the 5.56 and other small-caliber high-velocity rounds do.

I'm such a nerd.
Hence 'Nerday' written in 1337.

How do you think the new 6.8 SPC would do against small Deer.
Say like 175lbs and below.

Should be as good as .257 Roberts, which gets the job done.

Just trying to justify a 6.8 when I already have a (.223) AR-15 and an (.308)AR-10.

So I guess it comes down to this:

Do you want the latest, greatest, state of the art, the military is 'gonna have it so I need it too, it fills the void between the 5.56 and the 7.62, it's hard hitting, it can fire from a lightweight AR, and it's just plain cool, cartridge....or don't you?

Just remember this...wants justify needs, no matter how irrational they may sound.

Ok, you straight on this now?

Of course you don't "need" it... heh heh heh.

I don't need one either, but if, and when (hopefully), ammo and mags become readily available at reasonable prices I WILL have one!

For my uses, right now it is just an expensive toy...but then who am I trying to kid? MOST of my guns are just expensive toys these days!

I bought an AR-10B at the gun show this weekend.

Then I read all these 6.8mm posts.  Damn it!

I'm probably going to take the plunge in the next year or so.  When I do, it's probably going to be an SBR 6.8mm, because I have a .30 suppressor that will work well with it and having a 12" barrel in 6.8 will still provide me good ballistics.  I'm just waiting for someone to come out with 11.5" chrome-lined 6.8 barrels.
