I want to get a rifle in 6.8
I believe its more versatile than the 5.56. It wiil be a hunting and target rifle for me. Thing is, that ammo is not there yet and I am not much of a reloader. When can I expect ammo to show up in the shelves? |
Nobody can give you a date on this.
Certain dealers are starting to get some, but it hasn't made the mainstream stores yet. |
Brou, it's me again! Who are these mystery "certain dealers?" I really, truly want to know. I have a 6.8mm SPC rifle sitting in the safe waiting to be sighted in. I just tried Midway and Natchez and they're saying September! I would be very happy to get just one box of MC. C_M |
That's why I'm going .300Fireball. Brass is cheap, loading data is available and there are a boat load of 30cal. bullets that I can use in this ctg. I'd really like a 6.8 but until ammo is available and dies/loading data is abundant I'd really rather go with something I can get some use out of.
I was told by a very reliable source that ammo will be available this fall. September is pretty darn close.
I'm waiting til I start seeing ammo, and maybe till it comes down to at least 308 prices. If it comes out with good prices right off the bat I will be happy, and I will buy.
I already have a 6.5.... so Im gonna go witht the "other" 6.something upper
Based on what MidwayUSA is quoting, the price of 6.8SPC ammo will be about the same as match 308 rounds.. so about $14-18 per box of 20. This is what Black Hills 168-175gr 308, or Federal GMM 308 costs.
Want it cheaper? Reload! The only thing we don't have yet is a source for new brass. Dies are available, there some good bullets available, and enough load data is out there to get started. -z |
6.8 is aspiring to do what 7.62 x 51 has been doing right for fifty years. 7.62 is cheaper as well. Save your money and pass on 6.8 unless it gets adopted. Only then will the price become worth the change from 5.56 and viable enough to not consider 7.62 NATO
6.8 is aspiring to do it in M4-sized rifles, not M14 sized rifles. -z |
How do you come to that conclusion? |
Is that a freaking joke? Have you guys forgotton the .308? |
YOU CAN'T GET AMMO FOR IT! You'll save hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars each year! |
I knew there was a joke there |
How much? |
They have them on midwayusa.com for about $15/20 rounds.
That's $0.75 a round, way too expensive for me! When they come down to $0.25 a round, I'll jump on the wagon. I like to shoot about 200 rounds per range trip per rifle. That would be $150 per range trip. ouch! |
I sure could use a case 6.8 hopfully it will be available soon so I can fire my new build

I know who Kel is, and trust me, what he has pictured is probably the LEAST cool thing he has...

I'm w/ you - I like my .308's, thus I'm sticking w/ 'em! |
It is almost a year since I first heard of the 6.8 SPC and have went through all the ups and downs of this will be available soon, all I have so far is a set of Redding dies and 300 v-max 110 grain bullets. Decided to go the route of getting all the pieces first before I decide on which upper to buy. This is less stressful than having a rifle with no ammo to shoot.

It's cost effective because if ammo isn't available, you can't buy any. Therefore, it is costs nothing..
Actually you can. |

How is the good Doctor these days? Denny |

Because 7.62x51mm NATO/.308 Win. requires an entirely new rifle. I built my 6.8mm SPC upper for maybe $80 over the price of a standard upper. I keep reading over and over the reviews of all the 7.62x51mm NATO/.308 Win. semi-auto rifles: FAL, M1A, HK94/CETME/G3, AR10, and none of them are acceptable. They are all either 1) unreliable or 2) heavy or both. And a good one sets you back >$800. JMHO. C_M |

Quoted:
How much is a good 6.8 going to ste you back? Certainly more than $800. The 6.8 is/will be a better cartridge than the 5.56 but it will never replace the 7.62X51 for long range shooting or sniping. I don't think that a 7.62 rifle needs to be in the hands of every grunt but there should be at least one in every fire team. |
Wrong. If you have an AR15, all you need is a new upper. Model 1 will sell you one complete for $355. CLICK HERE |

Well, you also need mags, and ammo, or a reloading setup if you plan to do that.
-z |
I did say a good 6.8 . Seriously I have not purchased anything from Model 1 so I can't comment. I don't think you can compare a 6.8 upper to a complete 7.62 rifle. A new standard grade 6.8 is going to cost you close to a new 7.62 rifle. Now if your talking about a 6.8 SPR then you could really get a serious 7.62 sniper rifle. Like I said I like the 6.8 concept more than I do the 5.56 in any weight of bullet, I'll spring for a 20 inch A4 .68 when ammo and mags become available. |
Well, let's realistically compare price...
MSTN 6.8SPC upper, about $1400, plus any lower $250, plus a TA11 ACOG ($1000 inc mount old prices)- $2650. Each factory round is about 75 cents. Armalite AR-10T $1600, plus Leupold 4.5-14x + rings $1000, total $2600. Fed GMM 168gr .308 is 75-85 cents per each. JP Enterprises lightweight AR10 $2200, TA11 $1000, total $3200. Ammo same price. A good M14 built by someone like Texas Ordnance is going to run you $2300-$3000 without optics. A Remington 700 with a Leupold and good rings and bases will run you about $2000 without any accurizing work done. Reloads will be about the same price between 6.8SPC and 308. With regard to 20" barrels in 6.8SPC. It will be interesting to see how much velocity is gained going from 16" to 18" to 20". With so little powder volume, I am skeptical it will be as much as we enjoy in 5.56. Maybe I should have gone 16" instead of 18" ?! -z |

Can you say "phhhffft"? I knew you could. -Troy |

I fired my 20" Model-One 6.8 upper yesterday with remington factory ammo of the 115grain"open-tip match" variety(Why is, it that everything is "MATCH" these days).
It shot pretty good, in my opinion. Averaged about 1.25" group. The average velocity is 2709 fps. I am also working on handloads. I've had ok results, got several groups under 1". Velocity is still a little low, but I just started. So far with 110 v-max i'm getting around 2500 fps and with 90 speer tnt around 2600 fps. By the way, I'm using reformed 30 rem brass. No signs of excesive pressure yet. Only mods to my upper are a CMP under the handguard free-float tube and Young manufacturing Flip up front sight. JB |

No, Dater posts here as "PHD" (his initials), but my desk is about five feet from his. :) Hey Denny! Haven't seen you in a while... Maybe at SAR/Phoenix in Dec? We had a little industry get-together down at Z Tejas Grill in Scottsdale last time, maybe we'll rally up some nfalist old-timers and industry folks someplace good like that this year and we can all compare stories and lies...
