Spotted a well loved Savage double shotgun in 16GA on GunBroker that I want to ‘manufacture’ into an SBS.  Want to take the barrels down to 1” forward of the forearm and have a new brass bead installed. Want to clarify if the Savage barrels are soldered together from breech to muzzle.. Had an ‘expert’ tell me that the barrels would split apart on firing. Also, is there an ARFcom recommended gunsmyth that could cut the barrel at the listed length on the FORM 1 after it is approved by the AFT?

Thanks,

Barrels split?  Is that a thing?

I have a SxS approved, I was going to cut it myself; is it really that hard/dangerous?

Most have a top and bottom rib with a void between the barrels. A pug at the first inch or two on the end.

If you cut and there is a hollow void you need to solder it with a plug. Keeps the barrels and ribs from pulling apart.

Cheaper guns had a solid I piece rib that ran the whole length. It was made.to a specific dimension and barrels added.

More likely to regulate faster and cheaper to make. Although heavier.
