The topic of Snackbars being ‘sploded with 120mm mortar rounds came up at work today.
Was this a common occurrence? |

I'm sure it was common early, by my time anything over 81s needed battalion approval, and by the time you'd get it they were gone. But watching even the 81s firing for effect was a hell of a show.

OP, you had one job to do.
You didn't provide a video, and you should feel bad. This thread sucks without seeing the snackbar hit. |

Not sure if it was a 120mm, but saw some Snacks blow themselves up when setting up an IED on a route outside Mazar i Sharif when they didn't realize that once you have the IR beam lined up on the road (the trigger was basically a IR beam setup like you have on your garage door to trigger it from closing on you) and you wave your hand in front of it to test it.....that it goes off.

Lots of people were killed by 120mm during the GWOT. They fired constantly cross three theaters.
As far as actually seeing it happen, part of the magic of 120mm is it is not a line of sight weapon. I have done plenty of BDAs on piles of pink mush though. |

Not a mortar, but a 120mm HEAT round fired at an observer during ODS. Round hit short and skipped right into him.

No but if you get good on the Javelin CLU you could make someone have a really really bad day with one.

No, but I saw a truckload of iraquis hit by a 155. I mean like a 5 ton truck with like 20 of them in it.

Not my story, but a marine friend of mine in OIF watched an M1 Abrams put a 120mm round right through a stick and mud hut full of insurgents.
He said the pink and red smear was impressive. |

Doing a foot patrol in Sadr City in the vicinity of the DAC on route Delta and JAM targeted us with 4 120mm mortars. Missed us by a block and impacted the Jamila market. One of the rounds impacted a bongo truck of soda killing the driver and the guy unloading it. The reason I remember it clearly is seeing an almost perfectly intact brain in a lake of orange soda.
120s are no joke. |

There was a thread here some years ago showing some ISIS knuckleheads shooting a video. Part way through the video, a mortar shell is captured in slow motion coming down on the speaker.
It is shown in 1x playback. Then slowed way down to show the mortar right over the guys head. Then the boom. |

I hated going to weddings. All the grandmas would poke me and say "You're next". They stopped that when I started doing it to them at funerals.
