It’s not just UN rice and dirt.

Doro Wat. Translation is chicken stew.
Served with injera which is an Ethiopian sourdough spongy bread that EVERY meal has. I bought the bread at an Ethiopian restaurant. But cooked the doro wat myself.

It was damn good.
I have an Ethiopian coworker and he gave me a bunch of spices from the last time he visited. It was as good as any local Ethiopian restaurant I’ve been to.

I've tried it (at least whatever American restaurant's version of it is). I remember it as a bunch of stews and weird soft bread you grabbed at with your hands. Wasn't really impressed.

It's been a while, but I've eaten at an Ethiopian restaurant a few times. It was pretty good from what I remember.

That food always gave me the runs. As in Marathon runs.

Spicy. Flavors I had not tasted before. Not bad, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it again.
The spongey bread was Ok. They have another bread, almost looked like peanut brittle...that stuff rocked!

Definitely looks better than the last time I ate Ethiopian. I was digging goat bones out of nearly every bite.

I enjoyed the unique combination of spices and would have gone back but it was as if someone stuck a few goat legs, bones and all, into a Vitamix and then cooked the bone-filled slop in some good spices.

Have you tried Ethiopian food?
Nope, neither have they.

I have good news! You live in America. And unless you are a slob, your house probably does not have flies.

So you don’t have to get a deep tan, wear a dirty cloth that hardly covers your junk, and enjoy tasty food with flies.

You can just exist in ‘murica and eat good stuff in a clean house and not bitch.

The holes in that brown/gray bread creep me out. I don't like those particular holes. No go at this station.

Lol.  People in this country always try to eat food from poor shitholes as if it's exotic or something.

How do you start an Ethiopian marathon?  Roll a donut down a hill.  Heard that in 2nd grade and still think about that every time I hear the word Ethiopian.

I dated a girl that made me try it and I was very reluctant to. I was pleasantly surprised! It reminds me of Indian food but with the bread you showed, we ended up eating there a lot.

Yeah. People making food from distant foreign countries thinking they are exotic is stupid………

It’s their national dish…….
Like Vietnamese pho
Or Korean Bulgogi
Scottish haggis

It’s their thing.

Yup, but not really a fan of it.  I used to be the neighborhood liaison with The Ethiopian Community Development Corporation, who had an event center in my old neighborhood.  Lots of working dinners with the authentic stuff.

@mjohn3006 , there are still a bunch of authentic Ethiopian restaurants on Columbia Pike in Arlington.

Dama Restaurant and Pastry had been there forever.  Meaza Restaurant was highly recommended by the ECDC folks, but I never tried it myself.

Ive had it a few times at a place in Charlotte. It was surprisingly good… though I felt like I was in that scene in the Temple of Doom.. “Thats more food than they get in a week.”

Had it ONE time at a place in Durham/ Chaple Hell...

Too hot for me. I like spice but just not heat for the sake of being hot- or to hide bad food.

I've spent quite a but of time in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is 99% have nots and 1% haves. I was hanging out with the haves.

Great bars, great restaurants and beautiful women.  I like Ethiopia.

Yeah. We have eaten at several restaurants in the nova area. But I like to learn how to make it at home for 1/5 the price.

Yep.
Had an Ethiopian coworker that ordered from one of the restaurants that were not halal and run by Ethiopian Jews.
The food was always amazing.

Historically, Ethiopia was mainly Jewish. Until the Muslims moved in and started killing then 'en masse.

Yes, I like it. We have a good spot here in SLC, Mahider Ethiopian Restaurant & Market on State street.

The Ethiopians also make pretty good coffee beans.

Ethiopia was one of my best and worst deployments.

Doro wat is fantastic. I really liked canfir tibs (grilled goat) while I was in Arba Minch.

They have this stuff that's kind of like a salsa "da-tah" or something like it. Put it on everything, even dip bread in it. It's amazing. I've never found it for sale or a recipe.

When I've asked about it at Ethiopian joints, they always get really interested and ask how I know about it.

In general I can enjoy it.  It can be VERY spicy.  That said, some of the stuff on the menus are a bit gross to eat with your fingers.  One local burger shop had an Ethiopian menu as well - I think it was very authentic and almost all the people who were eating it were probably Ethiopian as well.  Eating mush porridge with your fingers just is not my thing.  But honestly, I guess I have gone to a dozen Ethiopian restaurants, and that was the only one that had a clientele eating mush like that.  It was kind of like Poi.  Google says it was called Genfo - and is not ALWAYS eaten with your hands.

Been some cookouts here in Bush AK that have food from all over the world.
Cooked by the people that were born in the countries.

Most of it is pretty damn good.
