SHTF and how I responded (Page 1 of 3)

[Last Edit: slash61]
I'm in central NC, just west of Charlotte. About 4PM power went out at the house, it's happened alot lately because they are upgraded all the service along my line. This time, it was because of basically a small tornado knocked out tons of power. Almost 700 homes just on this one outage.

We had enough battery powered lights and things to last a few hours, but there was no ETA for power to return. Around 8pm/2000 hours I went out and powered up my genny, staged it up to power the house, and now I'm sitting here drinking cold beer and watching re-runs of "ask this old house" while all the neighbors don't have any power. The crew is working on the fix now, just takes time.

Feel free to ask me about my set up, it's not super hi tech.

Edit: power came back on around 0200. Still about 30k people out of power in the Charlotte area.

Fellow Gastonian here, I responded basically the same. I am staying awake for round two coming in, and will be going out to cover up my inverter gensets shortly.

Stay alert.

Maybe a minor hiccup but OP already showed he was already more prepared than his neighbors. Unfortunately now they know it too. Hopefully OP is well prepared for more serious disruptions and his unprepared neighbors.

Well, I can say the tornado that came through passed within 500 feet of my home. That, and when the power goes out they start shooting around here. West Gastonia has police responding to a shooting at the 711 as I type this.

Geeze we lose power out here in the sticks all the time.

Yesterday was 3 hrs not even worth firing up the genny.

I'd be more worried about a tornado the power outage.
Tornado can kill shit, power out only kills my kids feelz lol

I lived on a small port in Korea with no heat or comms for over 2 weeks in the middle of winter in the back of a humvee.

Back then, i didn't have wife and kids to worry about.

Thanks neighbor. I'm in paw creek. The linemen said it'll be up around 1am or so. I'll stay up so I can change the power over.

Our power went out about a Month ago. It was terrible, I had to go out to my truck and use the Mobile Wi-Fi. Hope I never have to do that again. It was like a Nuke went off. The sun was shining, I could have gotten sunburn or worse.

Seems like alot of my LED fixtures don't care for the generator power. I haven't taken the time to put my amp probe on it to see what it's pulling.

Right arm!

You're not gonna believe this shit: The other day I was low on gas. You know what I did? That's right, I stopped and got gas! Problem solver solving problems!

But seriously OP, tornadoes, and shootings, power out... That's a bit SHTF I guess.

Treat every opportunity as a training experience.  Power out for a few hrs may not be but could be shtf depending on your circumstances.  What were your considerations if your neighbors came looking for help.
Refrigeration of medications

Unscheduled power outage- how much gasoline did you have on hand.

These are ones that have been very temperamental from the start. Like only a handful of dimmer switches will work with them.

Besides the preacher that lives next door, I don't know the folks across the street. I used to know them, but they moved out and it's a new crowd. If anyone would have came to me that needed to refrigeration medicine, if I didn't know them I'd just keep close eyes and let them put it up.

I'm in a semi rural area so things are different.

Setting up your generator is for poor people. Automatic startup backup generator for the win. All the neighbors are set up.  Only way to know power goes out is the noise in the neighborhood.

Wouldn't you know it, the one time in forever that I actually need a saw and I dropped the damned thing at the shop last week because it wasn't oiling.  I hope it's ready soon because I've got trees down everywhere.  That line of storms was pretty intense. Driving southbound on I-85 with virtually no traffic was surreal.  The only thing that gave any semblance of normalcy was that northbound side was dead stopped for over 5 miles.  Glad you and yours are safe OP.

Good on ya OP.

It’s a good excuse to make sure your shit is ready to go, if things get real.

Of course with this being GD, all the Chosin Reservoir vets will tell how they didn’t need no genny.

My basement floods 7" deep in 8 hours if my power goes out. My sump runs every 5 minutes. SHTF for sure.

Bought a generator just for the sump. Nothing in the fridge is worth saving anyway

OP needs to change title to : Power outage = how I responded

FWIW, I am in New Hampshire usa.

Power outages happen here all the time here due to strong winds, snow and ice storms. Some outages can last days.

LED drivers are extremely sensitive to voltage and frequency fluctuations.  A generator's output and frequency will flounder about like a drunk hooker.

Putting some load on the generator will probably reduce flickering.

wow... 700 homes out of power. oh my. Here in NE PA we get power outages that effect thousands just about every month or so. Got a house generator, lights stay on, heat stays on, internet... tv... hot water, everything. Takes more than a tree falling on a wire to make a shtf scenario.

losing power is not SHTF

If you lost power while you were on fire and bleeding to death that would be SHTF
