Great shooting!

Ha!  Practice is akin to cheating.

I've also made my own targets but mine deviated in the opposite direction.  Mine are for iron sights, so a much larger aiming black but the same small white target dot as in the original target.

Also, I shoot them from the prone position using a sling rather than from a bench with a bipod or benchrest.

It may sound like I reverted to small bore prone but there are no points in the game just hits and misses.

I was shooting them yesterday.  I find it difficult to score well without practice (which I do not get).

Great shooting guys!!

Yes, looks like a 23/25 above, but that rifle shoots obviously! Took me a long time tonget a 25/25 at 25yds, and haven't had the chance to try again. Hopefully soon!

Target was shot at a measured 25 yards.

Rifle is the same B14R lefty I've posted before, Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16, Timney trigger, Wallyworld bipod, and the recently installed Harrell's tuner is set at 140.  Ammo is SK Standard Plus.

I spent an entire Saturday clearing brush to open up the range at my new house. I've been shooting at least a box/day at either 50 or 25 yards, and the practice really shows!  I only missed one diamond, and that was only by .06".

I'm pretty happy with the results today

Ran out to the range this AM quick, wind was a bit gusty, around 15mph so just did a 25 yard target. 23/25, the misses were definitely me, the crosshair was exactly where the bullet hole was after the recoil settled. Rifle shoots really well, and hopefully after some more practice (and maybe more magnification) I can clear a 50yard and try for a 100 yarder! I'll have to be on my game though!

Vudoo 360, 20" MTU, Maven 2.5-15x44. SK Long Range Match. Has 136 rounds through it after these shots were fired.

Thanks! Always fun to get out and shoot. I think Hoser or someone may have has his pictured way back when? I ALMOST didn't put the target up, because I know the rifle is capable of a 25/25, especially at 25 yards, but I wasn't today. I decided I should post it up to show that even with fancy pants stuff, it still depends on the loose nut behind the trigger!

P.S., I debated buying the Vudoo for quite a while, as it's a big chunk of money for me...in the end, decided to sell some unused guns and accessories to fund it, and I'm loving my choice so far!

I'd be willing to bet you a buck that upper right hand one is a hit.

Stick a bullet in the hole, plug it or overlay it with a scoring gage.  The bullet it bigger than either the hole or the grey mark.

It's up to you.

Chanpion’s Choice has Wolf Match Extra which is very similar.

Girlfriend and I decided to have a go at this tonight. Didnt expect great results since the benches are...well, not really benches. But, given the poor benches we shot from and using regular CCI ammo I didnt feel too bad about how we were doing. Started with the 50 yard target, then moved to a 25 yard target (Range is 25 yards). Oddly, I think we got better as the targets got smaller. Aim small miss small?

I shot rows 1 and 2, she shot rows 3 and 4.

50 yard target (At 25 yards)

25 yards target (at 25 yards) (What the hell was I doing Row 2, column 1?!)

This thread is long. I forget if I posted, but, OP, take your game to an Appleseed shoot.  Don't bring anything fancy.  A 10/22, with scope of choice, or if bad ass, irons.  Have 1.25" sling swivels  and a Garand sling.  Have fun.

I don’t see any reason why indoors would be a problem.

I tend to shoot these targets on days when the wind is light and the range I shoot on is protected by a ridge and trees on both sides. It’s almost like being indoors.

I purchased 500 of the SK sv+ and 500 Wolf Match Extra tonight. From the two outfits in previous posts.

When the stars align I will run those and the CCI target ammo through 3 different ARs with the CMMG 22 conversion kits to see what likes what.

Thanks to those who gave the info on the ammo, plus those sites need some moar exploring

That is the problem....I do not have the budget for a Night Force...  Just want a good quality scope to plink with.

I didn't say anything about an NF scope.

What is your budget?

In the world of optics, unlike most other products, quality and price are inextricably linked.

Have you considered a used scope?  Unless the optics are visibly damaged, it will usually work like new but comes at a discount price.

I have a Bushnell Engage 2.5-10x44 scope on my 10/22 which is my most accurate 22.

The scope has good glass, a good reticle, has parallax adjustment down to 10 yards and can be found well within your budget.

I have been really happy with mine and wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

There are other magnification and objective lens options available.

I was addressing the flip side of that.  Thinking premium ammo will result in a 25/25 is a mistaken expectation - you cannot buy a good score.

For a less accomplished shooter, a run at these targets with truly crappy ammo can be educational, as is a run with truly premium ammo.  For example,...

The shooter, if they are half-decent, may learn the value of good ammo.

The shooter, if they need more practice, may learn that even premium ammo does not make up for poor fundamentals.

It's been too long since I last shot, about a year since shooting rimfire.  When I went, I took some of these targets and took another "turn in the barrel".

This is a fun activity.  I'm glad I did it.  I'll do it again as soon as I can get back to the range.

NOTES -

a)  Bottom row is sighting in after deep cleaning and re-installing the scope.

b)  Pencil markings show sequence of engagement and a few shooter notes.  I've decided all the misses were me, not the ammo - all of them.

c)  I forgot to deploy flags and to watch the wind (it's been too long).  That is why impacts drift right and then left.

d)  Fired using Wolf Match Extra (old production, pre-ELEY).

Reading another thread reminded me of something.  My target (above) was fired with a just-cleaned barrel.

That lower left sighting was a combination of remounting the scope and possibly some stabilizing after cleaning.

I shot a 25 yard clean today (25/25) with my AN-1.  <-- yes, I'm bragging!

I managed a 23/25 using my Remington Model 37.  It is surprisingly different than my AN-1.

I did some ammo testing, too.

Pics will be posted tomorrow.
Link Posted: 7/22/2023 3:25:15 PM EDT
[Last Edit: Trollslayer] [#48]
This is my first clean but WOW!, so close.  I thought it was 23/25 until I got out the scoring gauges.  The black smudge and hole in the copier paper are very much sub-caliber.

I had to use a scoring gauge to verify the two that were so close were actually hits.  I used both an Eagle Eye magnifier and a plug type gauge.  Both showed them as "skin of your teeth" hits.

This is an Anschutz model 54 action in a Competition Machine AN-1 chassis.

This is 23/25 is from my favorite rifle, a Remington Model 37.  This rifle was made in 1937.

On the right side are some ammo test groups, also fired using the Remington.

Lessons Learned -

The AN-1 stock recoils straight back and this is what I am used to.  The Remington has a bit more muzzle rise and you have to be more careful to control the recoil (butt solidly in the shoulder).

Next trip, I move out to 50 yards.

Here is a direct comparison of high quality ammo (pre-ELEY WOLF Match Extra) to inexpensive ammo (Remington-made from the CMP) fired in a good rifle by a not-so-good shooter.

A lot of the variation is from the shooter but not all.  The differences are plain to see but these groups likely exaggerates them due to small sample size (n=5) on the top 3 types.

The Remington likes Wolf Match Extra.

Cheap ammo shows its issues, even at 25 yards.  The bottom two targets have about 30 rounds of this ammo in them.  Note the pattern.  I also saw this same pattern while plinking steel.  This is Remington ammo from the CMP and it is now relegated to pistol ammo.
