Quoted: About a million years ago a friend of mine and I wrecked all-you-can-eat snow crab clusters. There was a copious amount of beer involved too, IIRC. That offer didn’t last long. View Quote Same thing happened to a place in Chicago my friends and I went to that had all you can eat king crab legs. Went there in June 2021. They quit serving king crab by the end of 2021 and closed in 2022 I believe. We absolutely wrecked those crab legs. They weren't small ones either. Waiter was attentive and brought out a new bucket as soon as the last crab leg was taken from the old. I felt absolutely disgusting by how much crab I ate that night. For those interested, Crab Cellar was the name of the place. Was a restaurant in a restaurant. Videos of it on YouTube exist. |

Quoted: about 18 years ago I gave up on Red Lobster and never looked back. Food went from great to bla. View Quote I noticed this from Olive Garden as well. At first, I thought it was just misguided management continually cutting costs and this lowering the quality long term... I still think that is happening, but now I also worry that the competency crisis is involved, and may make it hard for restaurants to attain the food quality they were capable of back in the 1980's / 1990's, even if the management wanted to prioritize quality. Somehow that is even more troubling. What do you guys think? |

A holding company bought Red Lobster from them about ten years ago, when RL was on the verge of bankruptcy. The industry was telling Darden to modernize their restaurants for years but they never listed. They just kept doing the same-old, same-old in an industry that never sits still. |

I bussed and waited tables in one for a couple of month in the mid eighties when I was in high school. The food quality was crap even back then (the "butter" came in these large cans labeled "buttered flavored product" or something similar). I did learn some interesting lessons that have held true to this day though. I've been in one since then, back in the '90s with some friends who wanted the endless (overcooked and freezer burned) crab legs, and everything about it was still utter garbage.

The bean counters at Red Lobster know exactly what they are doing financially regarding the all you can eat shrimp. If the company is going under, it isn't because of the all you can eat shrimp. Bean counters tell the company whether something is a good idea or not long before they offer it to the public. And if their predictions turn out to be wrong, they can always cancel or modify the offer.

My fiance at the time, now wife, and I were in the mood for seafood one day so we went to Red Lobster. Not the endless stuff just a regular meal. We walked out both wanting more crab. I told her "screw it, lets go get some crab legs from the store and I will cook up a couple pounds of crab tonight for dinner." Now we just make it a date night to make crab at home. Thanks red lobster for motivating us to just make it at home, worked out really well for our relationship.

Quoted: Red Lobster has been bleeding red ink for years. They never learn anything. Their endless snow crab debacle cost them millions in the early 2000's. Even though they've had new owners for ten years, they just keep repeating their mistake. Disclosure: Darden, their former owners, used to be a client of mine. I made a lot of money from them but they never listened to me or any of the other consultants they hired. They seemed to want consultants who told them how wonderful they were despite their business falling to pieces around their ears. View Quote I've done a bit of consulting. Lol. Shrimp are the easiest thing to make and aren't expensive.
I can see them losing money on 1-2 people coming in and eating a shitload of shrimp. I don't see how a guy at a table of 3+ they lose money on overall. That one person putting you in the red was well made for by the drinks and everything else ordered. |

Never again |

Quoted: “Endless” anything is stupid, because it draws in Gluttons and Fatbodies like ants. Everybody loves to get “Free Shit”. There’s a good percentage of people, who will pay any price and suffer any indignity, to get their Free Shit. Endless Pasta or Breadsticks or Salad is do-able, because the ingredients are cheap. View Quote Well, that and because how much Pasta can the average person REALLY eat. I'd feel like shit halfway through my second slice of lasagna or 2nd serving of breadsticks |

A nearby casino used to have an all you can eat seafood buffet for a set amount on Friday. I can't remember the price, but it wasn't cheap.
Forget about getting any crab legs. Swarthy families that weren't speaking English would watch the kitchen doors, and when the steamers of crab would appear to be on the way, they would simply rush the line and take every damn leg as if it were owed them. Fuck anyone, old people and kids included, that dared to get in their path. |

There might be other things at play too...
I read an article last year about a family of 6 going into RL and the only thing they ordered was the endless shrimp for 2 people. The server told them they aren't allowed to share, so the family took to social media to cry racism. The saddest part was reading the comments... Maybe 30% of our society didn't see the problem and several posters said "they paid for it, they can do whatever they want". Within the same week there was also an article about a lesbian couple that went to Olive Garden and ordered endless pasta for one person. Again, a large portion of posters commented that they paid for it, so they could share it if they wanted to. There were also several posters that admitted to sharing their buffet as well as people admitting bringing an empty pocketbook and filling it with crab legs. How can people not understand how a buffet works? Restaurants expect that they'll lose money on a small percentage of people, but overall they'll profit from the people that eat only 1-2 plates. Once people start sharing the buffet and stealing several plates worth they'll lose the margin that they had and just end the buffet. I was actually kicked out of a crab leg buffet once... I was bodybuilding at the time and eating 5k calories per day. I came in and ate like 9-11 plates and finally a manger came out and told me they couldn't serve me anymore. I could have been a dick and raised hell since there was no fine print, but it was more of a joke to me to see how much I could eat and if they'd cut me off. |

Chesapeake Bay Seafood House in Fairfax was an all you could eat place.
You bought in at a certain level of the menu and could eat as much as you wanted at that level and below. The last time I was there was probably 1986 and it was 15.99 for steamed seasoned shrimp and 17.99 for King Crab legs at the top of the line. Breaded clams and shrimp were 13.99 and breaded fish was 10.99. Never ending slaw, fry’s and hush puppies with all orders We would fast all day and roll that place hard with a group of friends. They were in business for years. A friend bussed there in 1979 and their register draw for a Saturday was 45k. It was a good sized place like a beer hall. Quality was good Of course they would ply you with fries and hush puppies to go with your pitchers of beer for a half hour before serving. We never feel too hard for that angle |

[#34]
That used to be a fall thing and would start around my birthday. There were a few years where me and my wife and several other couples went there. I guarantee they didn’t make much money for that week. As a table we would average about 1K shrimp per trip.

I just looked at the menu at the Cajun restaurant we like.
2 lbs. Peeled Shrimp, 2 Sausage, 2 Corn, 2 Potatoes, & 2 Red Sauce $38.99 It's a lot of food for two people. There's a few things at "The Lob" I like, but not enough for all that. I'll just go eat cajun. |
