Hello all:
Yea, I know it's 24 years since I registered.......

I'm an old guy, been loading since '73, shooting since I was a pup. From the wheat country of eastern Colo. I've accumulated several rifles and handguns.  I load for 'em all. There's a couple 223's in the bunch, one std, and one AI. Almost all have heavy barrels.  I developed this disease in the '90's, I blame it on my kid, he got me enthralled with the old Rem Senderos.

I've ordered a 24-inch heavy bbl AR from CBC Industries. No particular reason, 'cept I just like the long heavy barrels, and I liked their assy arrangement. And it'll be handy in the prairie dog fields. That, combined with Colorado's upcoming ban on ARs, I decided to enter the fray. All that, and it'll be one more gun my kids will have to dispose of when I check out. I've never been particularly enthused with ARs but decided it's time to try one out.  I'll be assembling this gun from their rifle kit. I'm not a 'mag dump' guy, so I'll be handloading for this rig. I'll use some factory Black Hills stuff to break it in.

I'm gonna peruse as many 'build' posts I can, and learn what I need to get this toy built and shooting.

Thanks for reading, -West out

OP, prepare yourself for the onset of BRD…Black Rifle Disorder…where you build a collection of them.

"Registered in 2007? 24 years? Fuzzy math. Welcome to the madness."

I can't find it to quote it, but somewhere there's a statement telling me I last visited in 2000.  So not fuzzy math (lots of other things are fuzzy, tho'). While I read the site posts occasionally, never been inclined to get involved in AR discussions. Now I have a reason.

And on "BRD - black rifle disease, is that a subset or precursor of heavy barrel disease? I confess to the latter.....

I'll see ya around the board, after my parts arrive.

Hehe, yup. Upon seeing PSA's prices on stripped lowers, I bought two, and another 16 inch rifle kit to go with it.

First one is built, and when I get over this cold, I'll start on the second.  Now gotta find some mounts and get glass on 'em.

Already lookin' at upgrades, mostly grips and stocks.

Just hope they run OK.

Hah! Have most of what I need. Have minor tool disease as well. bought my own roll pin punches and starters. My boy (of Sendero fame) sent me his AR tools. About all I used from that is the lower vise block. Fancy tools, but not sure what to do with some of them.
First 24 incher is built. Kits came with assembled uppers. Starting on the 16 incher. Do ome more later this week. Have sick wife issues for next few days.

What kinda glass are you thinking of?

I'm a little behind the times on gear and recently bought my first LPVO, and I love it. I wish I'd gotten on that bandwagon earlier. They're what this kind of rifle always needed IMO.

OK backbencher, ya got me on the gas comment. My terminology isn't even close to par, even for a noob. Care to elucidate?

Gear:

I have a couple older scopes lying around. One's a Burris 4x12, and the other is an old Redfield 3x9 Widefield. I'm gonna mount 'em in Burris high XTR Signature rings. That is if I ever hear from Opticsplanets. I gotta chase down that order. Stupid rings cost about as much as the guns...

If the 24 incher shoots well, I might eventually do a 5x20 or so. But that's only if the gun runs well. Lotsa bad reviews for CBC Industries guns, so I might of made a mistake......

Also, on both uppers, both CBC and PSA, the MLOC handguard pic rails don't match the pic rails on the upper proper. They're both off by 12-20 thou. Hopefully, I can get the mounts to fit the rail on the upper proper, and not have to extend onto the rail on the guard.  It'll depend on the scope tube lengths and mount positions.

Ennyway, something to take my mind off my cancerous wife.........

Length of the gas tube.

I wasn't even aware that there are any longer lengths than rifle length, so that's a new one on me.

There are some specialty things like that out there, but most common lengths longest to shortest are:

Rifle
Midlength
Carbine
Pistol

Your barrel is probably already drilled, so tube length is most likely already decided.

The great thing about ARs is the lack of recoil. If you're going to use it to shoot at paper at the range, you don't need a bulletproof (expensive) scope ...as long as you don't drop it much. That Burris would probably be fine.

Sorry to hear about your wife.

Fuck cancer.
