I still need to quit being a cheapskate and get a new good video card, but my latest build (dual quad core xeon 5600 series based)
is up to 24 GB of RAM and has 4 TB of storage, not counting the boot drive. I can do hardware RAID on it if I want to, and I'm thinking about turning that on for the pair of 2 TB drives. What's the best bang for the buck nvidia card out there right now? Don't bother to recommend ATI. I don't support ATI or AMD. CJ |

The GTX 570 card is plenty fast and costs dang near half of what the 580 does for a miniscule loss in performance. I read that there is an average of 6fps gain going with the 580 over the 570. cannot confirm or deny that but that is what i have heard. I saved so much money going with the 570 over the 580 I just decided to get 2 of the 570s instead! |
|

Im pretty old school but i play CS:S and i get 800fps on max settings 1080p res, i know totally unnecessary but i wanted to see what they could do. And also play everything on high with not even a shutter of lag EVER. That is with the 570's in SLI though.

It was a GTX460 that I got really cheap. But the GTX 470 I had worked perfectly fine . Apparently it was a widespread issue with Nvidia never admitted to or even tried to help with. |

Your Intel CPU doesn't run Arma2 any better than my AMD 965 Black, and I'm guessing you paid more for your CPU than I paid for mine. Intel CPUs have better architecture and they employ the best engineers, but AMD has the better performance-to-price ratio to the majority of end-users. Unless you're running software that has a specific need for the advantages an Intel CPU has over its AMD counterpart, you're better off saving your money and buying that AMD counterpart. I'm not an Intel hater, I just love money. Eta: I do hate nvidia products. High temps and constant driver BSODs turned me in to an ATI fan. I'm saving money here too. |

My 2500k was $150 and also got me $40 off of a motherboard. So I got the two for $220. Its @ 4.5Ghz right now and that took absolutly no effort. I just picked a nubmers plugged it in and its worked ever since.
My 4 year old Core 2 Duo E7200 was $130 full retail price when it launched. Overclocked to 4.25Ghz and could handle battlefield 3. I have read people having problems with BF3 using much more expensive and modern AMD CPU's Also I have to specify...When I say $$$ to performance ratio favors intel, I mean after overclocking not comparing default specs my e7200 was default at 2.53Ghz. You can buy a cheap intel CPU and overclock it to perform just as good as AMD's high end CPU's |

What would be the best setup for running ARMA 2 without any hiccups?

You could get away with an Intel 2500 (overclock it), nice motherboard, a decent amount of RAM, and a good video card and play just fine. It would run somewhere around $500-$600 or so for the components. Or, you get stupid insane and get a new LGA 2011 chip, an X79 series motherboard, an Nvidia GTX680 (or two), and 32 gigs of RAM and spend $2500 on just those parts before buying an SSD or two, a case, cooling solution (LGA 2011 chips come sans chip cooler), optical drives and a sound card. Either one will run ARMA II just fine, but the second one will be more "future proof" than the first. |

I think $1500 can get you in to one of those i5 2500k CPUs, a decent motherboard(Asus is the company to go with right now), 8gb of RAM, a decent video card(I'll assume you want Nvidia, I don't like 'em so I can't help there), Corsair TX series 650-750w, for a cheap/awesome case I recommend either the Coolermaster Storm Scout or Storm Sniper, and for cheap/awesome fans I recommend the Coolermaster 120mm R4 series. As for CPU cooling you can either go with a reputable air-cooler for anywhere from $35-95 or go with one of the Corsair Hydro Series water coolers(closed-loop/maintenance free) for around $70-150 depending on the model. I've used those hydro series coolers in my last 3 builds and they're pretty sweet. A rig with those specs would run pretty much everything you need it to run and more. As far as it performing in games that heavily relies on which video card you get. You can get more bang for your buck with AMD/ATI cards right now, but Nvidia does have a lot of nice models out there. |

If you buy the 2500k from microcenter a good motherboard and 2500k will be less then $280. The bundle gives $50 off. I personally would recommend to put as much money into the video card that you can stomach. It will be the limiting factor. And if you buy a high end one it will be good for years, and in 2-3 years it will still be worth $200. I would recommend a ATI 7950 or 7970 |

Well I got my AMD FX8150 overclocked to 5ghz, but the temps we're a little too high for my taste, I really do not feel like running my CPU at 100 F sitting at a desktop so I scaled her down to 4.3ghz. I had to drop my ram from 1600mhz to 1433mhz to run a more stable Overclock but hey you have to make sacrifices, besides no one will notice with the naked eye or hell anything but the most anal of performance tests the difference between 1433 and 1600mhz ram at 16 gig

If I just made the decision to do it, I could put both of my GTX280s into my dual xeon 5600 series machine, which has 24 GB of triple channel DDR3
memory in it right now. But I might have to upgrade the power supply to a 1000 watt supply to make it work. The GTX280s need both 8 pin and 6 pin auxiliary power cables for each one, and that means the PS would have to provide two 8 pin CPU power connectors, two 8 pin PCI-E power connectors, and two 6 pin power connectors plus main power and drive power cables. I'd end up having to fork over 200 bucks or more for a suitable Antek, Thermaltake, or Coolermaster power supply to do all that. A lot of times, upgrades have caused me to have to get a new PS. It's the most painful part of the upgrade. CJ |

How do you like the C70? I've been considering upgrading to that from an Antec 902. I like the idea of handles. Do the fans have filters at all? ETA: Also, how many fans does the case itself come with, and are they low-profile ones like in your picture? |
|
|
The C70 is an awesome looking case. Primarily the reason I got it, it looks like a big ammo can on my desk. There are (removable) dust filters at the bottom and front of the case, and it comes with three fans stock. Two are mounted on the hard drive cases (I tried to mount them in the bezel but the wires weren't long enough to reach the fan headers on the motherboard). Because it they had to pull air through so much, I changed them out for Corsair SP120 fans. The exhaust fan in the rear is an AF120, and the two exhaust fans on the H100 radiator are stock Corsair fans, which are comparable to the three that come standard with the case.

How sturdy is the build quality, would you say? Are the handles beefy enough to actually get used? Newegg has the black version for $109 plus a 10% off code and free shipping, and I'm seriously considering doing it now. I had planned on waiting until I got some other upgrade parts but at that price I think I might bite. ETA: which version of the SP and AF fans did you get, the high performance versions or the quiet versions? |
|
|
Build quality is very good. Pretty much every Corsair product I've used has been top notch. I use the high performance fans. I originally used an MSI GD-55 motherboard and the fans ran way louder than they do now with the Sabertooth Z77.

What do you think of the vented side window? I'm assuming you have a positive pressure setup so dust wouldn't come in, but I think it looks terrible if you aren't gonna put a side fan in there. I'm not, so I've been reading up on replacing the window with an unvented piece of acrylic. Seems like a popular mod. Corsair doesn't sell a factory one, unfortunately. |
