What is out there that I'm not thinking of because I keep coming to the 4Runner or a Frontier.
I want a midsize+ SUV that is: 1. Comfortable reliable daily driver 2. Offroads decent in near stock config (2 spd transfer, min9in clearance, can take an ARB bumper without a suspension redo) 3. Tows 2k comfortably in the mtns for weekend trips (rated for 4k) 4. Drivetrain that isn't from 20 years ago (because then I'd buy a 2009 4Runner or a 2015 Xterra) Prefer body on frame... but not required if you can convince me it can do 2&3... |

Don’t miss your last chance one of the best built off roading vehicles there is. Based on experience off roading and every day, use the Toyota 4runner inits current form Is an unbeatable combination? Average life expectancy of 200,000+ miles the ability to outfit it in way you want be able to go off about any place and drive comfortably every day.
The new model 4Runner Will have a four-cylinder turbo hybrid. Highly recommend the Trd off-road premium. |

Toyota sequoia, Tahoe. mid size? jeep (80 + year drive train tho..), 4runner, bronco. thats it. good luck with your unicorn search. its pretty easy really. find what you want from full size/midsize. that leaves you 2-3 vehicles. now narrow it down. |

I love T4Rs but it kills me the 2024's drivetrain is pretty indistinguishable from a 2003's, especially when I look at what is inside a mid 2010s Frontier. |

gx460 gets a very durable 4.6L V8 and a 6spd. Those 20 year old powertrains have been around because they just flat out work. |

Minimal experience towing, zero experience offroading.
But. The 2014 Mercedes ML350 I bought used in 2021 is rated for 7800lb towing, was offered with apparently decently reviewed off-road transmission controls, and has been super low maintenance for me. Wife’s 2014 E350 has the same engine and transmission and has been trouble free as well. Bought new in 2014. |

The deuce you say.

4runner, hands down. We accidentally drove "The Dragon" with ours a couple weeks ago pulling a 21ft camper! NO issues at all. That camper, loaded with all my wife's junk, was pushing our 5k pd towing capacity and it handled it fine.

View Quote You’re right I misread his post. He doesn’t want a 20 year old drivetrain which would disqualify the 4runner(excluding the new one). The Wrangler/Gladiator got a new transmission and standard Dana 44s in 2018/19, not what I’d call 20 years old. |

The OP knows the correct answer and is trying to talk himself into something else.

Just about any 4x4 SUV will tow that amount 4. Rules out Japanese vehicles Sounds like you need a 4-door Jeep and just deal with its daily driver eccentricities or get a 4Runner and enjoy reliability and comfort. |

Arguably the CVT eliminates the need for a two-speed transfer case, but it's still going the be AWD and not 4WD; the wilderness does have a different gear ratio on the axles to address offroad use, so it's sort of getting there. It really depends on what he means by offroad. Bad dirt roads no problem, trying to break axles by driving with the wheels side-loaded on two different boulders, problem. I traded from a JKU and so far no issues other than better gas mileage and no longer worrying about the valve train and cams getting explodey. |

I live in the real mountains (the road to my house has multiple 30% grades.) Go test drive one, it really caught me off guard when I pressed the pedal (after the turbo lag, of course) between that and the CVT that doesn't pretend to be anything else it has zero issues with mountains roads. |
