 Afternoon fatigue...::update in original post::

The past three or four weeks I have been very fatigued in the afternoon. I find it hard to focus on task and even get a bit of a vertigo feeling at times. Most days as I get close to supper time I start feeling a bit better. Some evenings I come out of it and others I am in a funk all the way until I go to bed. During and after work outs I feel good and while tired it is not the same as the fatigued feeling I have during the afternoon. It is worse durning the week and sometimes on the weekend I never notice it. I drive a desk and try to get up every hour for a few minutes and walk around.

I am 5'9", 188# as of stepping on the scale this morning, down from 194# three weeks ago. I take a generic multi vitamin every morning and Claritin for allergies.

Breakfast- M-F is a bowl of oat meal and cup of coffee, Sa-Su mixed bag but generally eggs, some form of pork, and pancakes or french toast.

Lunch- Usually left overs from supper. Some form of meat, a starch, and a veg.

Dinner - Meat, a starch, and a veg.

I usually have a diet soda on Saturday and that is it for carbonated beverages. I drink water almost constantly at work or home. I have a glass of milk two or three times a week. Once a week I'll allow myself some sweets in the form of cookies, a piece of pie or cake.

Update 2/16-
I broke down and called the Dr. to set up a visit. Turns out I had not been in since 2009 for a sick visit and right before I started going to the gym. Going to do a physical and blood work to make sure nothing is wonky and to rule out low T, thyroid, and anything else significant. Low T has been rolling around in the back of my mind even before this, but that may be from seeing the commercials everywhere. He suggested that I add an afternoon snack and that my work out is pretty vigours and I may just be running my tank dry and assured me I probably won't die before my visit.

Any experience on how long it takes to get blood work results?

Lesson learned- set an annual visit to the Dr.

I do believe the wife is trying to kill me though. For her Valentine's Day she made chocolate covered strawberries and a strawberry lemonade cake. I had a piece the past two nights and may throw the thing away tonight. It is pure evil.

Update 3/3-
I went to the Dr. today and after half an hour of Q and A he suggest the most likely cause is my significant reduction in caffeine intake. I went from two cups of coffee and a soda or two to one cup of Joe in the morning and one soda on the weekend. He is doing blood work on me next week, but feels pretty good that it will come back ok.

While there I hit him up about my shin. He checked me out and gave me full assurance that it wasn't a stress fracture and recommended new shoes and a ease back into running.

About the only thing brought up was my BP 132/88. The nurse said is was right on the cusp of high. The rest of the numbers Pulse 78, height 5'9", weight 192#, BMI 28.35kg/m2 (translation please?) Sp02 97% (translation again?)

Lastly...my tetanus shot did not hurt like the devil himself stabbed me this time.

Blood work was clean.

I am eating a bit more after lunch which helps and I actually pulled back my water intake a little. I may have been flushing myself out from drinking so much.

When you feel tired have you tried eating? Maybe your blood sugar is low during these times.

You're spiking your insulin pretty good with the pancakes and french toast. Experiment for a week with altering some of your diet and see if you feel better. Try cutting the above things, and maybe the starch too. Replace with protein, fat, or veggies. If that doesn't help then consider seeing your doc.

You may not be getting quality sleep too....

ETA- "I drive a desk" yeah dude, I know what you're talking about...sitting behind a computer screen is pretty tiring (sad but true). Can you go for a run at lunch time or something? That helps get the blood flowing...

The pancakes and french toast are a weekend thing and usually only Sunday or Saturday. With them I have a couple of eggs and bacon. On the weekends I don't feel the effect as much. What about the oatmeal? Would I be better served with eggs and some meat, cheese, or veg?

Sleep might be an issue. I end up getting up a time or two a night to relieve myself. Maybe cut the fluid intake later in the evening.

I try to get up and circulate every hour at work. It's about 100yds to our cafeteria so I try to brisk walk down and back to fill my water cup. It's getting to the time of year that I will be in meetings for 2-3 hours at a time which will be miserable.

Hmm...well, personally I would prefer eggs over oatmeal mainly because the fat and protein will keep you fuller longer, but I sort of doubt that's causing your problem. Definitely worth a shot though- it's an easy thing to try right?

If lunch isn't an option can you do something a little more strenuous in the morning or late afternoon? Just a 15 minute run might be enough to help a little.

Just sorta throwing some ideas out there that might help...

I had a bit more for lunch today and feel better you are probably onto something.

I am working hard to drop some pounds, improve my diet, and generally improve my health. It's hard to give myself the OK to eat something outside of meals. What is going to give me the best return on the investment for a snack? Cheese, meat, veggie?

I may try to tweak things to get in a run at lunch. It's a tough turn around though to change, get the run in, and shower up and be back at my desk with enough time to eat. After work I go home, have a light supper, and then go to the gym three days a week.

I don't feel hungry going into lunch, but the some eggs and meat would be worth a try to see if it helps me pull through the afternoon.

I guess what I'm really getting at is to just mix things up...workout at different times, try different kinds of foods (stick with healthy stuff of course) and see what happens. For me, working out at lunch when I can seems to keep me more alert...that may not work for you.

Experiment!

Had any blood work lately?

A lot of guys are testing low for testosterone these days and afternoon drag is a major effect of low-t.

I am set up for blood work next week and it is one of the main things I am interested to find out about.

Add some snacks in there –– nuts, fruits, cheese, yogurt, etc

My lack of energy turned out to be thyroid problems.

I now take synthroid and lots of vitamin D (my body wasn't producing enough of it) I feel much more energetic in the afternoons now that those to things have been restored to normal.

That being said I have no idea what to tell you other than seek professional opinions on the matter if you can not resolve it via diet or otherwise.

I'm sort of dealing with the same stuff right now (fatigue issues)

I would start with trying to improve your diet. Listen to what Roland has to say on this thread. He knows his stuff.

Also, you could get some bloodwork. You could have a thyroid issue, low testosterone, low Vitamin B or some other issue. A sleep study might help also, as you could have sleep apnea. Obviously, at this point, you would need to get a doctor involved.

My thought, too.

Couldn't hurt to go in and get some blood work done. That's how I found out
my thyroid was only about a 1/3 of what it should be.

Not sure if you recently started your exercise regiment but I know some people describe similar symptoms if they're over doing it and / or not eating enough. Could be your body's trying to fight off an infection.
