I set up an account so I'd be ready for tomorrow, and it won't recognize my login info. I'm wondering if it is just me or what.

Actually it seems worse now and it seems like they continue to copy other MMOs.

For example there's a new feature called Duty officers. You send them on missions which they complete for rewards even while you're off line. Sounds very very familiar to that crew feature in The Old Republic.

It also appears they have implemented a 3 currency system(like many other MMOS) where only 1 of the currencies can be used to for general trade. If you want to buy a new ship you can only use dilithium which can only be refined from ore which can only be acquired as a reward for grinding PVE missions, or traded with other players for real money. There is also Gold pressed latinum. It's required for some duty missions but the only way to get it(as far as I know) is to play Dabo

I hate to say it, but I am kind of enjoying this game. Already a lvl 13. I spend way too much time suiciding against the borg though

I enjoyed it for a while when it came out, but it got old quickly. The inability to properly maneuver in a 3D space was a significant issue for me.

Ok, I've been playing it a bit more and I will give credit for improving the skill "tree". Before it was overly complex and highly specalized to the point where skills bought at lower ranks became useless at higher ranks and you were "stuck" with a specific ship with a specific weapon type and weapon class. Now we can switch ships and weapons as needed while keeping skill bonuses.

is it normal to get disconnected fairly frequently?
and if a weapon shows a rank listed does that mean you need that rank to use it? I'm assuming yes

the exchange is the place to go to make energy credits. I had a ton of mineral things from scanning anomalies. Selling them for 200-300 each on the exchange

You need to be at least that rank in order to use it but it's smart to use the highest ranked gear you can afford.

Since you practically need to guy new gear each time you rank it's best to only by common stuff, that way you can resell it later. Uncommon upto very rare becomes bound if you use it and useless later on. Stuff bought with dilithuim is bound on pickup meaning you won't ever be able to resell it.

that's lame. guess I won't be selling one of the ground weapons I got as loot off a dead klingon then as I think it said it was rare in the description and I did get some kind of warning about not being able to resell it.
I'm still a lowly Lt, but I did go from Lt5 to Lt6 last night

just finished the mission with the listening post and then the big battle against species 8472, I forget what they call them in this game, where you side with the klingons. I was close to making Lt7 and that bumped me there and left me close to Lt8
now I have duty officers, and now I see how you start to get cash flow. just send them out on missions and then go to sleep

too bad I have to work tomorrow

It is lame but STO like every other MMO out there is all about the grind for end game content.

The only way to get the ultra elite warp speed no drag tier 1 gear is to grind elite missions. There is no way to buy those items off the exchange because they are simply not sell about. You can't even sell the data chips or borg salvage used to requisition items to another player.

At least I'm a LT general and I don't have to worry about upgrading my warze any more.

Not that it would be time well spent if there was a lot of PVP going on.

The PVP games I did manage to get in over the past few days have been the same story. One side rapes the other prison style because the losing side can't manager to every get through the shields of the other team for what ever reason or the other team rips though the other's shields like they were nothing(damn anti-proton weapons)

There was only 1 match I had in the past few days where both teams were evenly matched.

looks like the new patch broke auto fire, but there's a work around
I made captain today. the defiant is sweet, very maneuverable and the 4th forward weapon slot helps.
DragoMuseveni  [Team Member]
2/4/2012 12:38:25 PM
Some of these missions don't make me feel like I'm in the Klingon Empire. I was doing those Breen missions last night and in one you need to interrogate a Breen officer. You have to be nice like a Starfleet counselor and if you insult the Breen's honor he'll stop talking to you and you fail the mission

I'm a LT General in the Klingon Imperial Navy. I didn't get here by being touchy feely like Starfleet. If you won't talk just because I said you're a dishonorable fool for attacking helpless civilians I will beat the crap out of you.

Also in the above mention mission I had to beam over to a ship and give medical treatment to a few injuried people. Listen, I am a tactical officer. I am skilled in hurting people and breaking shit, not making them feel better. The best I can do is a double tap from a disruptor pistol at the maxiumum setting which will stop the pain.

And why do Kilingons use Starfleet Tricorders?
sharky30  [Team Member]
2/4/2012 5:07:17 PM
it just took a dump
which sucks as I was taking part in that ground mission where you have to rescue people and then activate forcefields to protect artifacts that is impossible with out a ton of people and we were actually making good progress

guess I can't complain too much since I play for free. although I have been thinking of buying enough c-points to get extra character slots so I can try out the klingon side
DragoMuseveni  [Team Member]
2/4/2012 5:14:49 PM
I tried getting on a little while ago but there was a queue and I had to wait in line. And here I thought I had no need for the Gold service as I won't get any more free respecs since I'm maxed out level wise and the energy credit cap can be lifted with a 1 time C-shop purchase.

I'm enjoying the hell out of the game. Drop me a friend request slavac@jakeboudreaux

ETA I'm probably going to buy a defiant and mount 3 dual hvy mkXII antipolaron borg's front w/ one xii quantum torp for spread along w/ three antiproton turrets rear. Sort of tired of flying a heavy cruiser that's slow as christmas.
sharky30  [Team Member]
2/8/2012 10:51:29 PM
I'm loving my defiant
seems very maneuverable. I haven't tried any cruisers yet other than the light cruiser you start with
I have a quantum torpedo launcher, dual phaser beam heavy phaser cannons and a turret (can't remember the type) up front with plasma mines and the retro TOS phaser beam array in back

tactical officer has the torpedo boosting skill, fire at will and the rapid fire cannon skill

hitting the non-plot klingon encounters around Sol is hilarious as they don't scale and show up as -20 something

I'm about to hit level 40 so I'll be deciding on a new ship in a day or two. I might simply keep using the defiant and just up the Mk level of all my gear to what ever an admiral can use.

I've also decided to start buying c-points with my dilithium, since I don't use it to buy ships since you get a free ship with every rank promotion, so I can get extra character slots and start running a klingon in addition to my current engineer captain, and probably try out a tactical captain that uses cruisers

and I'm hooked on this game for some reason. maybe as I'm in a star trek mood since I started re-watching DS9 in its entirety via amazon prime shortly before starting to play STO. I can have ds9 on one monitor and sto on my other

Keep your defiant. Once you hit 45 you'll want to start doing STF's vs the borg for the really good gear. The defiant is fantastic for these types of encounters.
sharky30  [Team Member]
2/9/2012 11:13:54 PM
another promotion, another ship
prometheus now, I wanted the extra weapon over the defiant
tricobalt torpedoes are awesome, but I'm not sure how effective they'll be against better enemies that might shoot them down, I was using them on the first klingons I encountered after leaving earth, they were rated as -38 so it wasn't a fair test
they also have a longer recharge than regular torpedoes. I might move it to the rear if I can in place of me mines and put a transphasic torpedo launcher up front

so many choices, so little energy
can't wait to do the war zone mission tomorrow with my new ship
DragoMuseveni  [Team Member]
2/10/2012 7:26:13 AM
And STO sinks to a new low with the lock boxes you need to pay $1.20 for. And that's what the game is going to be centered around from now on. Pay a $1.20 for a change at some rare item and instead of the DEVs fixing game breaking bugs they'll be focused on what new rare items they can come up with. I've been here before with Nexon.
sharky30  [Team Member]
2/10/2012 9:34:10 PM
I got a lockbox as loot, haven't opened it yet
I also got a tricobalt mine launcher as loot, so since I can't put the tricobalt torpedo in back I think I'll use the mine and get some kind of real torpedo launcher. I've had too many tricobalt ones get shot down

edit: and I won't be opening it unless I can find a key on the exchange. 100c points per key is ridiculous
edit2: probably won't be buying a key on the exchange either, they sell for over a million

News Flash. MMOs or rather, more correctly...MMORPGs are NOT for PvP.

PvP only exists in MMOs to get the riff raff griefers away from the people actually trying to play the game. MMO PvP is a cesspit, it is where the shit of the communities congregates.

If you wanna "PvP" play Call of Duty.

All that said, I'm enjoying the shit outta ST:O.

I'm in the same boat... 5 loot chests but im not going to pay to open em.

So far my heavy dual phaser cannon and photon torpedo defiant seems to be kicking butt. I'll usually make a gun run on the opposing ship then drop a sack of mines on em
sharky30  [Team Member]
2/11/2012 2:01:04 AM
my main tactical officer has that mine net thing as one of her powers
that with transphasic mines seems to work well
my secondary tactical officer has the scattershot power which seems to work a bit like fire at will, in that it will target multiple ships at once, but for cannons

I've got a ton of cardasian lock boxes. kept finding them as ship loot and then I did one of the plot missions that had some ground fighting and got 3 or 4 more
too bad the lockboxes don't sell for much on the exchange, and c-points are about 100 dilithium more tonight than they were the other day when I did some exchanging

I'm still lugging my tricobalt mine and torpedo launcher around but haven't equipped either in a while
the enemies that would really benefit from getting hit by either will often shoot them before impact
I went back to quantum torpedoes and just changed from transphasic to quantum mines
plus my tactical officer's torpedo and mine buffs don't work with tricobalt ones

Trico's can be fun, but the reload time on them is horrendous. Protip: get a nice quantum torp launcher forward mounted and train one of your bridge officers in torpedo spread II. You can wreck shop with this.

How many characters do you have?

You're supposed to get a free klingon unlock at level 25.

1
the klingon button looks to be clickable now that I'm high level, but it doesn't show me having any open character slots so I haven't tried clicking it yet out of fear it would delete my existing character to make room

edit: I just hovered the mouse over the klingon button and it shows 1 klingon only slot remaining
woo hoo, I don't have to burn a slot to get a klingon
