 Anyone play Birds of Steel?

I made a thread about this game awhile ago but apparently it slipped into the archives.

The short of it is that it's console only and is a spiritual successor to IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey.

Birds of Steel released this week and it's as close to a PC flight sim as you can get on the console, especially on the Sim difficulty. Obviously you can run a flight stick with it, which I would suggest for Sim just for the use of a free-look hat switch, but I've heard you can also hook up a keyboard for added button assignments (you can pretty much remap your console controller too).

Right now the multiplayer is relatively busy... at least as busy as a flight sim game that had a very low key release could have on a console... and most groups that get together (unfortunately its peer-to-peer like CoD) seem to be running Sim, which I find a little too difficult for me. I can run a Realistic difficult host, which is somewhere between Sim and the horribly arcadey Simplified mode, but it doesn't seem many are into it. The last couple days I've only been able to join Simulator or Simplified and since I'm needing kills to unlock skins for my planes, I've been putting up with the crap I see in Simplified.

All that being said, any Arfcomers pick this game up yet? Would like to party up (360) and dominate some people in the air some time.

Not yet, but i enjoyed IL-2 for what it was. despite its flaws, its the best flight sim on home consoles.

Me and my friend just picked up the game, its pretty good so far. It does suck that no one seams to be setting up realistic lobbys. Make more credits for planes in them, we made a decent amount in simulator but i never even got a kill in them and killed my self twice by killing my engine

I'm hoping to pick it up once I get a little free time on my hands. I've heard that it received some really good reviews.

Finished unlocking the 99th FS skin for the Mustang Mk IA (which actually looks like a P-51B with the red tail skin) earlier today. Also found out the alternate controller layout for 360 makes Sim a bit easier... at least you don't have to push any extra buttons to do free look in the cockpit, which is what I prefer to fly from anyway.

The P-38, while likely realistic, is a bit of a let down since it doesn't fit my fighter style. I like fast and nimble. The Lightning is fast... it ain't so nimble.

Thanks for reminding me about this one! I didn't know it was out.

I'll have to check it out once I get through my backlog. I still haven't gotten my fill of Skyrim yet!

It's technically a bargain title at $40, but aside from a few bugs, it's upper-end quality for an small-time developed game. I'm enjoying it and a week after release in the U.S. the multiplayer is still relatively populated. For the most part I play with a specific group of regulars and I anticipate they'll be around for awhile.

The single player has it's trouble (mostly unreasonably difficult missions), but as I said before the game is as sim as you can get on a console. It's definitely worth picking up if you dig the IL-2 games.

Here's a fan-made trailer that popped up on YouTube today. Unfortunately it's not an HD so it's not a great representation of how the game looks, but it's a good trailer nonetheless.

Good luck finding a copy. Most stores only got 1 if that.

Can always order it online though.

You can order it online from Walmart. I've been playing this with my brother for a few days when his law school and my grad school allow time. We really like playing in Simulator one you figure out that you have to actually fly the aircraft. We have quite a few bitches about the game, but it pure awesomeness seems to outweigh them for now.

This is generally how I feel about the game. I prefer Sim mode have found a small group of regulars that make it that much better online. It has its problems (it's on a console, after all) but I'm still having fun with it. I'm trying to promote it a little in hope of generating enough sales to get us some good DLC. I know they have some planned, but we were told it would be dependent on sales.

My main wish for the game is to have a separate P-51B/C rather than making all the American skins for the Mustang be used for the Mustang Mk 1A, which is only available on British maps and has a completely different armament from its American cousin. My other gripe is that the P-51D has no skins. Hoping that gets taken care of in DLCs, though my hopes aren't high.

I'm BradC34 on XBL and I generally play late at night except on my off days... if I'm home.
