Thailand Flooding Has Crippled Hard Drive Quality

Just a heads up for anyone who may have purchased a hard drive during the shortage:
We ordered 50 Seagate 2TB SATA HD's (7200RPM 64MB) drives during the shortage. We had 6 DOA failures on the lot.
I'm sort of curious how many more will bork once we start beating on them 24/7.

Years ago, I bought a couple dozen seagates, and got a bad lot, a quarter of them died in the first three months. I sent the while lot back, and they replaced them with refurbs. A quarter of that lot died within a month.
I stopped buying Seagate after that. Any manufacturer can have a bad lot, but to replace them with even worse drives.... That really turned me off.

I hear ya. We bought 5 drives to replace 5 dead ones and had a bad drive in THAT batch. Sigh.

HDDs have a chance of failing out of the box or soon after so I'd wait for some solid proof/numbers before assuming quality took a nosedive due to the flooding.
FWIW I've never had an HDD I've purchased fail on me yet. The last one I purchased was a month or two before the flooding. WD Blacks and SG Barracudas in my rigs.

That's actually a pretty low DOA rate for Seagate. Seagate = shit.
Check the label and see where they're made... all the newer Seagates I've encountered have been made in China.

Up until a few months ago I built computers for a living, ran my own shop. I started out selling Seagate in all my systems. Over a 3 year period of time that is all I sold, when it got to the point of 30 percent failure in the first year and 42 percent over a 3 year period I quit and went to WD. Until I quit hearing about other peoples similar issues with Seagate I will never buy another one of their drives. My sample is from around 1000 drives purchased and installed over a 3 year period of time. Also WD doesn't stick you with a refurb when you do a warranty exchange, you get a new drive unlike Seagate.
