we're replacing an HP 6500 since it dosen't print 2 sided auto, don't do legal & my wife's about to let me take it
down range (not really, gonna trade it for magic beans)

Anyway, we've been HP folks for a while, and have gotten used to taking it in the shorts for ink; yes, we're
refilling em but it's still not cheap. Wife runs homeschool & a small online sales biz from home.

what do ya'll do to get over the ink hump with home copiers? Do the HP cartridges have an overide to make them
use all the ink before needing to be refilled?

Probably get an 8600 series HP on sale somewhere unless there's another option; thanks

I can't speak from the ink side, but the 8600 is a good printer. I just deployed two of them at my place of business. Not sure how much printing she does, but the 4500 is a smaller version and runs about $100 for the printer. Probably not good for heavy printing, but keep that in mind as well.
A word of warning I would be careful when getting "aftermarket" cartridges. I have had issues where printers won't recognize some aftermarket even though they are built for the printer I was working on. Good luck with your search.

My advice? Get out of the ink game completely. Get a laser printer.

Ink and inkjet printers are just expensive as hell to run, although the printer itself may seem cheap at first. As you've noted, you either take it in the pants on manufacturer-branded cartridges, or deal with the hassle of refills.

Especially if you print a lot, the economy of a laser printer can save money over time. About the only reason to buy any inkjet printer today is if you need to print color in very low volume. It's no contest for black and white printing, but color lasers are a lot cheaper than they used to be.

Here's the first color laser I found that does 2-sided printing, and will print on legal-size paper, for under $200:
KONICA MINOLTA 1650EN Color Laser

There are others in a similar price range. Generally, you'll pay extra for duplexing.

A full set of replacement toner for that printer runs about $145:
Konica Minolta 1650EN full toner cartridge set
That may seem like a money all at once, but how much were you spending on inkjet cartridges for 1500 pages of printing?
