 APFT in theatre

I have been in Kuwait since November running convoys north. While we have been here its been said that you can't be flagged for apft failure or weight while deployed. I have checked ar 600 8-2 and the section 1-9 that refers to this has been rescinded. Is there some other reg that covers this or is it just barracks lawyers run amok?

You can be flagged. There is an ALERACT (or whatever it is) message about it. IIRC, what it boils down to is that you cannot be given a record PT test until you have been in theater for 90 days. After that, the usual rules apply.

Thanks for the info. Now I can lay that one to rest.

The answer lies in AR 350-1 and I believe 18 December 2009 is the latest edition. If this is the case it clearly stated in para 1-24 f. (3) (b) on page 13. Upon return from deployment Soldiers will be administered a record APFT no earlier than three months for AA and six months for Reserve Component Soldiers.

Every Soldier should be able to pass an APFT at any time though (just my way of thinking) and you must maintain weight standards regardless of deployment status. The requirement to of maintaining weight standards while deployed can be found in the same reg.

Now you can lay it to rest. I hope your deployment is going better than mine.
Be safe and God Speed.

Really? I was administered a record APFT in Talil, Iraq in June 2008. That's what I was doing when I hurt my knee (I'm currently a 2.5 mile walker until I get scoped).

I think I probably got fucked on that deal.

I just read 350-1 and it states that after deployment the unit needs to wait 90 days for apft but the para. above also states that pt and apft are performed at the commanders discretion. I appreciate the feed-back and the the guidance to the correct FM's and AR's.

I fully intend on having my guys conduct an APFT before we redeploy while we're still in theater. Mainly to avoid the asshattery when we get back and some new senior leadership wants PT tests before people go on leave or whatever other BS they throw down.

I'm sure everyone will pass

I have also been told that in order to do a PT test for record in country you must have an approved track.

That would be a hell of a motivator, pass your pt test or your not getting leave after deployment.

There is absolutely no standard defining an "approved" track. I have taken them on ice, and taken them on sand.

IIRC, it has to be 2 miles total, and cannot be more than a certain percent of grade, like 1 or 2%. I don't recall anything about the actual surface, but it does outline it in the reg that covers the pt test.

Regardless, that is the same in garrison or deployed - there is no standard defining an approval process for such a track. It is up to the unit to decide whether it is suitable. Naturally, there are basic parameters laid out in the currently out of print manual.

We had a ton of the barracks lawyers (all the PT dud's) when we were in country try to pull this one on the commander... It was a BS excuse for many of them that wouldn't have passed if they were running down hill with a tail wind on them....

Around the shit lake in KAF. haha. Took more PT tests in AFG than I did in three years of garrison.

We did one in Iraq a few months back on the rock/dirt road all around the outpost. Another one scheduled for this month, yay.
