Seems to be a good little convertible car. I got my eye on a 2001 3.0. Right color for me(white exterior, blue inside) Automatic but I can live with that. What to look for in one with 54K miles? Price? Know problems?
still in my quest for a convertible.

I'd get a PPI done (pre purchase inspection)

They should be fun, but the Zed Three isn't as stiff as the Zed Four. Buddy had a Z4, and it was a blast to drive, even with the auto transmission.

I've driven almost all of the major roadsters (S2000, Miata, Z4, Boxster) and found that while they all had great points, the Boxster was the overall king. S2000 had AMAZING brakes and a very nice shifter, but had a much more 'raw' or 'go-kart-like' drive. Fun but would be tiring as a daily. The Z4 was very tight, but didn't stand out much in any particular area. Good car for a DD. The Boxster (I had a 2001 base model) handles the best, has great steering response, but the shifter is sloppy since it's a cable unit. The brakes on the S are probably better. It was a great car as a DD as well.

The Boxster S is also on my list. I was thinking of a 2002 model but I was scared off about the bearing for the timing chain going out. What is your take on that since you did own a Boxster S.

+1 on the PPI.

I had one done before I bought my 330i used.
The dealership couldn't be bothered returning my calls trying to make an appointment, so I went to an independant shop.
German guy, German techs. Worth every penny of the $80 it cost me.

My mom has a 2001 Z3 3.0 Sport. Red with tan top and leather.

Its fast as stink and handles great.

Stereo sucks
Heater sucks
Temp knob sticks and breaks from time to time (100,000 mile CPO warranty FTW).

Not much else has gone wrong.

Its their third car so its not driven alot. Maybe has 80000 miles.
