Who did you buy from? Were you satisfied with the quality? Delivery? Etc

Why would you? Do you not have a local shop that is competent enough to build what you want or are you price shopping with factories? If the later go with them and enjoy your cost savings. Maybe in a few years you can design your kitchen around ikea plans. If you haven't found a shop that can fit your needs then i understand looking else were but any shop online is either mass production or not worth what they are asking so need to advertise outside of the area.

I would be scared. Like more scared than I was watching 'The Shining' at age 11.

If you're anywhere near the Bay Area shoot me an IM. I know of the best, cheapest cabinet place in existence.

I install cabinets everyday. Just like everything else, you get what you pay for. I would avoid an online buy. With cabinets, you dont have to go top dollar to get something that is of reasonable quality, but it is critical to make that quality judgement in person and not from a photo online.

For budget jobs I use JSI which are chinese flat pack cabinets that come fedex.

Very nice finish for the money and made in China

For nicer standard sizes and full custom I use Smithport from Tennessee

I previously used a lot of Birch and Omega until I found them.

Better quality at half the cost.

If you look at either and are interested let me know and I can forward you the contact info of my cabinet guy.

I'm a General Contractor in Atlanta and do a lot of kitchens and baths

I personally don't use small local shops and truck everything in.

Thanks Handydave. I am exploring options. I could build the cabinets myself but that takes time I don't really have.

As a kitchen designer, I agree with what he said. If you order it yourself, you will get to experience all the fun parts of receiving the kitchen when it comes in. Something is always messed up, whether it is broken, missing, not what you ordered, etc. You really can't judge a cabinet by seeing pictures in a catalog, you have to see a sample, preferably the exact color on the door style that you want. If you are looking to save some cash and don't care about replacement parts, the Chinese knock down cabinets aren't terrible. I'd buy them before IKEA cabinets to be honest. The local Chinese stuff around here is all plywood construction with actual maple doors. The hardware is terrible, but the price is super cheap. If they don't have the size you need, they will substitute other sizes to fill the gap. Unfortunately I am not too familiar with what is available out on the west coast so I can't really recommend something. Lastly, Direct Buy doesn't save you that much money, they sell at the same profit margin as I do. I talked about pricing with their reps when we were in a product class together, I was kinda curious.

I just installled knockdown RTA cabinets that I ordered online. All plywood, solid maple face frames and doors, finish was good. They assembled with cam locks, which I'm not a huge fan of, but they're sturdy and easy to assemble. I can get some pics up later when I get home, and feel free to PM me for where I got them.

Price for my kitchen was $4k, local sources were around $11k, Lowe's wanted $7k for their crappy in stock cabinets. For overall value, I'm quite pleased...but then again this house will likely end up a rental once I'm done with it and move into something larger,

ETA: Delivery was a breeze, just check everything over really good prior to signing, I had no damage to my order, and everything was there. I had to make a subsequent order due to a f up on my part, and that went smoothly, but they nail you for shipping on such a small order.

Where did you order?

I am wanting something for my garage - would these chinese cabinets work ok?

Depending on what you're using them for, they might work. Like pretty much any kitchen cabinet, they're not for industrial storage....I wouldn't go filling them with lead wheel weights and expect them to stay together.

For what it's worth, I'm taking one of the extra base cabinets (due to my f up), and turning it into a rolling stand for my benchtop drill press. The drawers will hold all of my bits and accessories, and the press will be at the right height and easy to tuck out of the way.
