 SHOT SHOW 2011 - Photos 1

Ok before you see this post and ask, "WHERE ARE THE PHOTOS!!!!!", let me explain.

This is final testing of our new album sharing upgrade for the site. Basically team members will be able to store and share their albums with a simple click. The actual display may change if we don't like this one, but so far it's holding up well, so let me know if you like it or not.

The way it works is simple, just click on the ALBUM photo below and it will open up an album browser which will allow you to view thumbnails along the top, go through photos 1 at a time (left/right arrows over the photo), view the photos as a slide show (play button), view the full photo (click the enlarge button), or close it out.

I'll go over the new toys for the media services later, for now enjoy the photos... 300+ photos, almost all from today.

Do you have javascript disabled? The album viewer is DHTML, CSS, Javascript.

I can see it, but having a problem, I think. I click the expand to actual size option, but it bumps back to the smaller size as soon as it goes to the next photo. Am I doing something wrong or is it supposed to do that?

edit - then if i click expand on the next photo, it moves the frame lower on the screen... after about 2 pics, have to "move" the frame back up to top of screen and restart. Any full-screen option avail, or can you anchor it to a permanent position?

That's "normal" behavior for the full size clicking. I did not write the viewer and this entire system is really a BETA test with live photos. The idea was to create a simple way to share photos with the media server access everyone has. We have a new uploader coming (we're using it from SHOT) that allows bulk upload of files too.

So our general work flow is shoot photos, mass upload photos, album automatically displays current and new photos. When it goes live to everyone, you'll need to make sure you album is public when you add it to a post. My goal right now is to only allow topics to have photo albums shared, since we can create shared or group albums open to everyone.

With regard to the viewer, it's the one we are testing out and one I liked. It isn't perfect, but it saves me from having to write and maintain more code. It was rough enough doing the other side of things and the integration, but I think it will add a lot of value to how we share photos and how we revisit photo threads. Now we'll be able to create huge shared albums with contributions from each of us. (AR Photos, Event Photos, Etc)

A suggestion. Place the Arfcom watermark either upper or lower corners. It gets in the way of viewing the image.

Thanks. I'm already getting accustomed to it. I like being able to right-click and "view image" directly from it, then immediately go back-1-page and pick up where I left off.

The tool works ok. Two minor issue I see.

1. When you click on a small picture and the new window opens, the small picture above it always default to the start of the album. Not very helpful

2. When you mouse over the large picture and the little menu pops up - it is very difficult to read.....any way to add a little fill behind it so you can read the words? About the only picture where I was able to read the words had a white back ground. I did not even notice it on the first 5-10 photos.

Thanks for the work....you do a great job improving the site every year.

Its one album with hundreds of random images? Any way to group shit together? Colt, Beretta, Magpul, Hotties, EdSr, etc?

I reversed the order so it makes more sense. (Oldest images first.)

When we shoot photos we try to get the shot of the company logo first, then the stuff in their booth, this way you know what goes with what as much as we do. Since it was setup to show the newest photos first, the company logo showed up after the booth photos. Hope that helps for now. Keep in mind a few photos will still be random, such as things like booth babes and random things we come across at the show.

As for the album sharing, I'll look at your feedback when we get back to adjust things or simply look for a better display engine to utilize.

So the photos ok so far? First day of shooting for us and we got 300 photos, I think all 4 days last year maybe added up to that many. We had video shoots Monday and Tuesday, so we just got on the floor yesterday. A lot more photos to come today!

Would be nice if there is some way to add a caption to the picture. Maybe mouse over to appear like the toolbar.

Well the controls are javascript heavy and utilize AJAX which is rough on phones. It's setup to load thumbnails so increase load speed, but it's still 300 images and not light by any means.

Ok I'm heading over to meet the crew in a few minutes, just waiting on one more video to upload. Today's photos will be uploaded to a new thread and album to make it easier for everyone. The last thing we want is to have a 1000 image album to have to load.

The album sharing controls will be made usable for members after our return when we finish fixing little issues we've run into. Same thing with the new bulk uploader.

Hope you guys are enjoying the photos. Oh and they do allow for captions to be added (just like normal media uploads on the site), but when you are doing 300 images a day, it's hard to even think of taking time to add them. We figured by ensuring the company logo/name is with the photos or right before them, you'll be able to hit the company's site and get more information on the products you like.

The whole photo gallery thing is neat, but for shot show I don't like it. The photos have no context, they need captions which this doesn't have...

Is there another place these photos are hosted outside that player? Not bad mouthing the concept just asking if they are viewable in another format.

We could take time to caption them all if you want the photos next week or the week after, when we have time.

Too much staring the gift horse in the mouth around here. "This pics are out of focus, there aren't enough, where's the captions?, waaaa, waaaa, waaaa." Good hell, just say thanks to the man and be grateful that someone is doing this for you at no charge.

Thanks for taking time to post up the awesome pics GoatBoy.

It looks absolutely terrible in the iPad and on whatever version of IE they have installed at work, probably IE6. I appreciate your hard work, but I'm just being honest here. If you want to look at another js image viewer library, the most tested and established out there is called IIRC 'lightbox'.

Eta: like another poster said, on iPhone, and iPad, and on my work comp with IE, it loads every single photo as a thumbnail in the original post, which makes page load take forever. Also, the image viewing box looks all jacked up and the next/prev/close buttons don't show up, but rather their "ALT" text does. I'll try more browsers in the am.

eta: It also looks terrible (same as on ipad) on Safari on a Mac desktop, which makes sense because they both use the WebKit engine.
eta: It looks good, and as expected, on Firefox 3.

SHOT was awesome BTW. I didn't see the KNS Precision MG style grip for the AR's in the pics. Did I miss it? Those were awesome! Imagine that mounted to the roll cage of a Rhino or Razr...super cool rig. Thinking about an H1 with it...in my dreams? or near reality? Only time will tell...

Your comments are referring to the quality of the photographer...not to the image tool. He didn't request a critique on the photos...just on the viewer.

Gaotboy, how were you guys uploading these photoes? Were you taking pictures with a camera then uploading them with your PC?

I just got a new phone (Samsung Focus) and it can actually automatically upload pictues as you take them to facebook, windows live skydrive, and another site I cannot think of.

Just putting that out there for next year as it might make it really easy on you, and it would actually give us an up to the minute update of the show.
