One of the few genres I never really got in to. Blood Meridian is one of my favorite books, and I really enjoyed readingTrue Grit. Any recommendations? I'd like darker, gritty plots and better developed characters than John Wayne cardboard cutouts.

Lonesome Dove,,,Any of Larry McMurty's westerns have a dark side, but Lonesome Dove is by far the best

I highly recommend a western entitled The Shopkeeper, by James Best. My wife gave me a copy for Christmas and I flew through it and quickly ordered his second book in the series, Leadville. Now I have to wait for the author to finish the thrid book.

+1 for All the Pretty Horses.

If you want good westerns you read Elmer Kelton.

Anything by Elmer Kelton. Best westerns ever, some set in modern times.

Also, Robert B Parker's Appaloosa series. Four books, the first of which became the movie with Ed Harris and Vigo Mortenson.

Always a good read. I must own 30+ paperbacks. All of them are solid stories and great characters.
