Without spoiling it, I really think what happened to ODA574 resulted in a) a loss of momentum on the UW side of the house (even though President Karzai made it into office rather quickly any way) and b) allowed the conventional side of the house to gain traction/divert our main effort from what it was (and should have been) to what it is...and is taking a long time.

Excellent book, I also finished it recently. I had no knowledge of the events, so what happened was a surprise to me. His other book, The Last Season is also very good.

I just finished this yesterday and agree with all of the above. An amazing story that I had no idea it even happened.
