I really liked this book, but thought it was a bit basic, can anyone recommend more like this?
did a search on amazon, and there were quite a few "verbal judo" books.
which one are you referring too?
I use verbal judo almost every day. But sometimes, I have to resort to verbal sumo. Or even gerbil voodoo.
I learned it the hard way and found it better than using fists, feet, walls, floors, lightpoles, sidewalks, curbs, parked city vehicles to subdue someone. Verbal judo is an important tool because it helps diffuse otherwise physically confrontational situations and if it does become physical, it looks better that the officer tried to resolve things verbally before resorting to force.
I used to ask, "Is there anything I can lawfully say or do to dissuade you from this unlawful course of action?"
Another line I developed was, "O.K. You pay my wages through taxes and I work for you. Now, I'm going to take either of two orders from you. Either you're going to tell me that you're going to go away and I'm not going to do anything to you
or (with a pause) you're going to stay here and have me arrest you for ____ and take you to before a magistrate. Which order are you giving me?" Most were smart enough to give me order no. 1.

Order #1 probably saved on doing a lot of paperwork....
