Looking for a book i read as a child, regarding the US Army and a recruit and his time in the army.

Details are pretty vague as i recall, the main character is a black male named Amos who joins the army, and eventually becomes a tank driver.
One detail i distinctly remember is him 'knocking out' an 'enemy' tank with a jerry can ( as a simulated incendiary device ) during an excercise.
Anybody remember? i think it was called Amos Joins the Army or something like that but i can't find it via google.

It appears it is Tank Driver by William Butterworth from 1978.
