 barking dog

So I have a 12 year old male beagle named Reggie. He never used to bark but with his old age he is not able to hold his bladder as well as he used to and he is going in the house. I understand this is a normal part of aging for a dog and we lock him up when we go out. I also think he has some dementia as he will walk into a room and forget why he went there. He is also gone deaf.

When we go out we put him in the biggest bathroom with 2 pads down on the floor and his blanket in the other corner. we leave him with a bowl of water and we make sure he is fed before we put him away.

About a minute after we lock him up he starts barking. He barks until he is let out. This could be anywhere from an hour up to 6 hours.

I am looking into ways to fix this problem. I have seen shock collars, I have seen ultrasonic emitters that will "create a bark free zone" and a friend told me to try pills.

I don't think the ultrasonic emitter will work because he is deaf. I tried my cell phone dog whistle and he didn't even notice it throughout the spectrum.

I would rather not use a shock collar on him, this would be my last resort, but I believe it would work with good results.

What sort of methods would the hive recommend in this situation?

not to be harsh but if he is that old with that many problems. a 12 ga. will solve the problem

He is not in any pain and still enjoys life. He also enjoys barking.

I understand where you are coming from but we are not yet there.

Get him a puppy?

We have a senile old deaf dog that will forget about the dog door and bark at the patio door. One of the pups will herd her to the dog door.

That's exactly it. I don't think we could pull off another dog.
