Is their any way to stop this stupidity - it is such a waste of everyones time and forum space to read five pages of in and tagged nobody cares. Be nice if the mods could get control of this it's really getting out of hand.

Not even close.
There are legitimate reasons why posting in the thread is better than just "subscribing". You don't get some of the features available on this site with a bronze level membership. But answer this, "What would I do to find the threads I subscribed to that are now archived? Searching my user name is a pretty good way. Without actually posting tag or something similar eliminates this option.
