My leg was swelled up so the Dr. had it wrapped. [Update Dr.s office just called me back]

It was wrapped with a blanket of cotton and then 2 stretch wraps. I was told to keep my leg elevated above my heart for the 1st 24 hrs, but they didn't tell me when to remove it. I called the Dr.'s office yesterday and asked when I should remove it, but he wasn't there and they said he would call me around 1400. I was sleeping because of the pain meds, and and missed the window to call him back, so I lefty it on again last night, but this morning my leg/foot was hurting so bad I had to take it off. This is what I found under the cotton, and wraps.

My ankle felt like it was broken and my shin hurt so much. I ended up taking 2 hydrocodone pills after I unwrapped it, and took my son to school, and when home.

Poor circulation. The arteries deliver blood under pressure OK, but the veins don't send it back very well, so blood pools and body fluids build up (edema). There's no cure, and the only "treatment" is pretty much limited to prescription support stockings that squeeze the leg and foot all around.

Ask me how I know.

Dr. said it was because my injury to my knee, and then the operation. He said it would get worse before it got better. I'm hopeful it will all go away with time.

Here's the dog that is eye fucking my leg bone.

Keep an eye on him and get better so you can play with him.

Tincture of Arnica, it won't seem like it's doing anything but after the 2nd day you'll notice a big improvement.

Dr.s officer just called, and they want me to put it back on until next Tuesday.

It's called a bulky Jones wrap. I honestly don't want to put it back on. It made my ankle and leg feel like they were broken.

Is this normal??????

holy moly

looks like you might need to use ALPs alternating leg pressure system to get blood flowing.

Then just keep the leg elevated above your heart. Also, contracting the muscles in the leg helps to 'pump' venous blood and lymphatic fluid back to the heart.

Don't know about the overcooked part but he sure didn't deglaze it or encrust it with anything to enhance the flavor. Guess he must hate his dog.

Good luck OP, I think I'll keep my creaky old knees without the staples and such.

You had better do as instructed––we'd hate to have to put you to sleep.

On a more positive note, what kind(s) of guns do you have?

You should lie down, with your body flat on the bed, and elevate the leg so it stays above the level of the body - it'll help fluid drain into your torso, decreasing swelling.

You can go to someplace like walmart and buy a multipack of support pantyhose (i think they are leggs? brand) or what ever other brand is cheap. They are a cheap substitute for medical compression stockings. Use one or two at the same time for compression. A better substitue would be lycra spandex compression leggins, such as running/exercise types, but those are much more expensive. You may be able to find something similar in woman's clothing, but you would have to look around for those.

You will have more problems from the edema if you stand a lot and don't move. As mentioned, there are valves in the veins that help to keep fluid from pooling in the legs. when you use your muscles, they help to move fluid in the leg, so the more movement you do, the more it helps to keep the swelling down.

This may or may not get better with time. sorry to say.

edit - to add

if you are getting too much swelling, and you don't have room for the compression to occur because the wrap is too tight, you'll get something called compartment syndrome - basically pressure damage to the tissues. the wrap should not cause your leg to hurt, so I would suggest either not wrap it as tight or leave it off for a while and just elevate it until you talk with or get seen by the doctor.

- paranoia check - another thing to consider is if there is a lot of pain that increases, you have more swelling and discoloration, you get a feeling of heat from the leg, or localized tenderness on palpation, you may have to watch for something they call a deep vein thrombosis, which would necessitate an eval by a doctor or er.

- as always, refer to your doctor for the proper course of treatment

Compartment syndrome is no joke. I had a four compartment fasciotomy on one leg already. OP, keep a keen eye on that leg and do not hesitate going to the ER if necessary.

Compartment syndrome is bad. They'll cut your shit off if it's bad enough. I spent the longest 24 hours of my life sitting in a hot bath praying for my leg to change colors.

I had it happen after a stint operation to get more blood to the foot.
They made 3 7" long cuts.
I had a wound care nurse visiting for 30 days to change the bandages.
I had to wear a vacuum bandage the whole time.
It was a bitch getting it to seal properly.

To OP:
Did you send your DR the pics you took?
If not, do so.
Keep him updated best you can.

The hydrocodone takes about 1.5 to 2 hours before I notice the pain going away, and I get mildly drowsy. School is a 15 minute drive so I felt safe driving him there.

I re-raped it yesterday after I got off line seeing it was starting to swell up again, The Dr. said to keep it like that until my visit next Tuesday. I lasted until 10:30 last night when the pain became to much and I had my son unwrap it. I kept it elevated and this morning it's fine. I still have some blackish undertones under my ankle thought, and my skin was super itchy, but very tender to touch it.

I may or may not re-rap it before I go see the doc on Tuesday.

Thanks for all the really good med advice, and warnings which I will heed.
