For those of us that kan't reed so gude. Ahh one of my greatest victories was in 3rd grade when I was told to put away the comic book to which I retorted it isn't a comic book, it is a graphic novel (It was either Tin Tin or Astreix IIRC).

Rebel by Pepe Moreno
1980's style punk rebels take on the totalitarian Sanitation Police in post apocalyptic NYC.

Crecy by Warner Ellis
English longbowmen at the Battle of Crecy.

Soooooo many great options.

One that immediately comes to mind is Batman: Killing joke.

Impeccable art, excellent writing. Perfect.

Batman agrees

I can neither confirm or deny that this scene is permanently preserved on my body.

I don't no if this counts as a graphic novel or not since it was a standard monthly comic but done as a set number of issues but it is probably the best comic ever written.

This book started it all for me, so I guess this is my choice for best.

Currently reading this. Even next to my leather-bound Sandman books, this is probably the most beautiful graphic novel book i've ever seen.

Actually, A Dame to Kill For, but I don't know if the cover for it pushes COC.

The Dark Knight Returns. When it was released I'm not even sure there was such a thing as a "graphic novel".

My favorite as well.

The first "graphic novel" I remember reading was The Death of Captain Marvel in the early 80s.

I really like Girl Genius!

My favorite graphic novels are
Valérian and Laureline - a science fiction series of graphic novels WAY ahead of its time.

and Alix - a series of graphic novels about a young man's adventures during the early days of the Roman Principate.

and of course, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - a four-book series (in the final omnibus form) that is phenomenal
