Police recruit training film...
It's a deserted military base in southeast California near the Salton Sea. The area is plenty strange and there are a lot of snow birds that camp there in the winter. The whole area is pretty much described as WTF.
They could do a Mad Max remake there.
The Sean Penn movie about Chris McCandless was filmed there.
Into the Wilderness. McCandless was a dope but it's a good movie.
Motorcycle helmets and a whiffle bat melee.
Genius.

I've been to slab city before, if you can believe that.

Bartertown.

Same here. Spent a winter there with several hundred other RVers, including a lot of Canadians.
Generally nice folks - For the most part, everyone did their own thing, and left everyone else alone.

I just read the Wiki on this. Interesting read and some good insight.
Looks like fun.

No shit.
I was only there for the afternoon, really. We went to see "salvation mountain" and hit slab city and Salton city while we were out there.
It's a cool little place, in a really fucking weird way.
No Women live in Slab City?
Saw that a couple years ago. Sorry but if I lived there and a gang of punks tried to take the little I had the local cactai would bloom early.
That's not OK.

Teenage anarchist punks decided if if they couldn't make the gov't pay for their existence the impoverished outcasts on the playa would.

With the other problems the state is having, this is not even worth mention.

That's like saying because the state has a budget problem we should turn a blind eye to child molesting.
Looks like some of the supid shit during Junior Senior wars in high school.

Yep.
The Mos Eisley of the California desert.
I spend a fair bit of time in the nearby desert. NFW would I go anywhere near the Salton/SlabCity/Niland metroplex without an armed escort. I have a policy of staying as far the fuck away from tweekers as I can.
Burners.
Chocolate Mountain Gunnery Range is on the other side of Slab City. Try rolling through it in Hummers and six by's. I was never called a Baby Killer and War Monger more than rolling through that place.

Used to be Camp Dunlap MCB it trained Arty and AAA units during WW2. The slabs are the floors to the barracks and buildings after the Corps razed and decommissioned the base.
I work out there every now and then and I HAVE TO GO THRU slab City.
Summer is mellow because the heat drives most away.
Winter time...
Anything goes...your on your own....
I still cannot get that image
of a 100 year old naked woman with sand bag titties
walking around
The only reason I stop is to check out Salvation Mountain.

#2, I don't see anything wrong with that video. Looks like folks were having fun playing around with fake plastic/rubber bats.
Not my idea of a good time but more power to them if they like it.

Well...There's no homeowner's association - and the zoning laws are pretty lax!

......The fuck?

Not a damned thing, but people still think that libertarianism is analogous to anarchy for some fucking reason.
BTW, libertarian societies depend on (among other things) the private ownership of property, and strict enforcement of such. The squalor that is Slab City (communal property, effectively) is exactly what libertarians expect to see, when property can't be owned.

The "Slab City Riot" was a motorcycle run that the guys from Chop Cult put on. The video is from the run after the beer started flowing. It was held 2 years in a row but got cancelled the third year because the city officials told them they were not welcome back and would send the cops down to write tickets to everyone.
Link

Because this is what libertarianism is, and what all libertarians see as their ultimate goal... that's the OP's inference? Is that correct?

Yup. I know of not one libertarian, or a libertarian who is also an anarcho-capitalist who doesn't view private property as the keystone to liberty and property.
So is this in honor of Rodney King?
Vice Guide did a good feature on Slab City. Tons of meth there.

And while I'm at it, I don't know for sure, but I think it's safe to assume, that many (if not most) of the "residents" live at the expense of others, care of the State. Given that none of them actually own the land they're on, you could actually say 100% of them do.
This is the exact opposite of libertarianism, but people see rampant drug use and general rowdy behavior, and go "Oh, look! A libertarian paradise!". It gets frustrating after a while, when people keep using the exact opposite of libertarianism, as examples of libertarianism.

And that's the big difference. If these folks owned the property, or were allowed to live there based on the mutual accord of a landowner, then I would have no problems with them. The fact that they are squatting, rubs me the wrong way. I'm also assuming that most probably also get a check.
I have no problems with folks who want to opt out of the government system and set up their own little commune utopia and live off the grid, on private property. Collecting a check or living on government land constitutes a problem.
These people are
SQUATERS
The government owns it..
City officials......
Unless its Niland.....2 barnie fifes

McCandless spent some time living nearby a similar hippie/drop out community near the Salton Sea just before leaving for Alaska. I just read the book two weeks ago.

The anti-libertarian folks are typically too dense to see the what libertarianism is really about so they cry "anarchists!" or
pot heads!" in their weak attempt to disparage the movement.
I lived in parts of San Bernardino County and Riverside County (collectively known by SoCal residents as the Inland Empire) for about eight years. Few decent middle class towns along the Orange County and La County border, but for the most part 98% of those two counties are the arm pit of America. I've also been out to the Salton Sea area and other desert areas in the eastern parts of the Inland Empire such as Indio, Hemet, La Qinta, Yucca Valley etc. for work numerous times and if the arm pit of America has an arm pit, those areas are it. Just one more crappy part of Southern California I don't miss.
Edited to add: 95% of the "residents" out there are on some form or another of government entitlement (disability, welfare, WIC, etc.).

There's nothing fucking out there other than them , some canals , snakes , pack rats and UXO.
OH MY GOD!!!
A place where people are doing things that the government doesn't approve of! Worse... doing things YOU don't approve of! They must be stopped! We should have a small, limited government, except when we need to stop people from doing weird things! Then we must have unlimited government and all the jackbooted thugs we can get!
As several others have pointed out, this is anarchy, not libertarianism. But if it's by choice, I don't see where I, or anyone else, has the right to go in and tell them they must live by certain rules. So long as someone can leave anarchy any time they want, and cannot bring anarchy to me, it simply isn't any of my concern.

During the winter months, the vast majority of people who stay there are retired snowbirds. The "check" they get comes from their own retirement accounts - a significant portion of which gets spent locally (Niland, Brawley, El Centro, etc.).

I will be near there in a few months....
Dove opener around Niland has been a constant for 30 years.....
Part owner of 80 acres 5 miles from Slab City.... Limits regularly...use it for ducks during winter..... Coyotes, pheasants, jack rabbits ... plenty of shooting
I have been told it is a state campground with no time limits, named because of the slabs of concrete remaining after the Army Air Corps left.
TWEAKERS SUCK! They have walked into a camp full of armed drunk men trying to steal bumpers for the metal... Crazy nights for sure!
Reality is it is a 4sq mile patch of desert in the middle of nowhere.....
