Obtaining a relative's service record?
My wife's grandfather passed away over Thanksgiving. He was part of a tank battalion in WWII.
Over the years he opened up quite a bit and shared a lot of his experiences with me, something he didn't do with any of his kids. He's also given me his basic training tank manuals and several things he collected while in Europe (mostly medals and coins taken from German soldiers). I also found out last week he left me a few more items.
Is there a way for me (or my wife) to get a copy of his service record?
VA.gov. A relative can request service record for a deceased Veteran. Not sure what is involved though. I requested copies of my medical records recently, while doing so I noticed there is an option to request records for deceased relatives. I'm pretty sure you must show the relationship or be executor of an estate.
Found a link from there to do a request, thanks!
Also found some other neat things the VA offers like a Presidential Memorial Certificate and a medallion that can go on his headstone.
