Is this a weasel or a mink?

I'll post the question, then the story as originally posted in "Homestead farm and Garden", then the picture. My wife killed this thing with her bare hands. Animal control says it's a weasel, taxidermist says it's a weasel, some other comments on the other post and even pictures I find online point to it being a mink. What do you guys think?

Last year we had a weasel get in and kill all of our chickens. Now we have new ones...11 layers and 16 broilers that I'll be butchering this weekend. This morning she was about to leave for work (dress clothes, high heels and all) and heard them going crazy so she went running out there (loosing her heels in the mud in the process) and got out there and found a weasel latched onto the neck of one of the chickens. It wouldn't let go so she kicked at it (barefoot) and it let go and latched onto another chicken. She didn't have anything to hit it with and knew she didn't have time to find something, so using napkins she had in her hand she picked the weasel up and as it bit her twice in the hands she squeezed the little fucker to death with her bare hands!

Mink––much larger than a weasel.

They are extremely aggressive and almost fearless (I'm talking about the mink, but this obviously also applies to your wife), so if she killed it with her bare hands that is quite a feat.

Better do two things:

Keep her.

Be nice to her.

Edit to add: A little google searching indicates a weasel at 6-14" and a mink at around 24" (including the tails of both). It's hard to tell in the pic, but that could be a large weasel. Do you have it available for a measurement? They are very similar in both appearance and habits. Either way––good kill, and kudos to your lovely wife!

I'm going with mink. From what I've seen the coloring seems to be more consistent with the mink. Weasels that I've seen tend to be a two-toned or more of a lighter coloration.

Hard to tell from the Pic.
They share some of the same characteristics, because they are related.

However, as mentioned, an Adult Mink is Larger than an Adult Weasel (Usually, as with anything there are exceptions).

Easiest way to tell is to check the feet.
If they are partially webbed, then it is a Mink.

From the description of the "Attack", it sounds like a Mink.
Mink usually attack the Neck. Weasel try to crush the skull.

Both are Carnivores.
Mink tackle slightly larger prey like muskrats, snakes and rabbits
Weasels concentrate on smaller animals such as voles, moles, mice and chipmunks.

Both will eat insects, eggs and birds.

Check the feet for webs; mink test.

At first glance the coloration says mink. Your description of it's activity says weasel. Generally when dry mink tails seem a bit bushier/fuzzier than that, weasel tails look like that, straight normal hair,
Not for nothing but I've never handled a weasel that dark in color. Most were much closer to a camel color. Color variations are certainly to be expected in wild animals.

As a conservation officer I see a lot of mink, dead and alive. Not so many weasels.

I clubbed a sick weasel once that was falling all over itself due to ingesting rat poison either directly or via eating mice/rats eathing poison. Sent to state pathologist who determined that.

OH and your missus is not a woman to be trifled with.

with a name like Supremeweasel I'd listen to him. (my nickname all through grade school was weasel (a mutilation of my family name)

I've trapped with my father for past 20+ years and my father another 35+ years with his grandfather.
We have caught 100s of mink in our trap line and that IS a female mink... At least around here in Indiana, weasles are very rare to non existant mink are plentiful for most part. Appears to be a large female mink or small male mink.

haha thanks for all the feedback guys.

I work with a taxidermist and he first said that it was a weasel. Animal control also said weasel. Animal control also sent it's head in for rabies check meaning I couldn't have it mounted (which I REALLY wanted too, good story for grandkids someday). I told animal control that I wanted the hide so I'd be back for the body. They called later and said I coudn't have it because they were out of season. I went off on them and told them I was coming to get it (shoulda threatened sending the wife in!). Gave the body to taxidermist and asked him to double check that it was a weasel like he said because other people were saying mink. He came back and said that it was in fact a mink. I'll post back when I get the hide back. Animal control said two weeks for rabies test, I guess I should call them too. BTW, it was a male mink... he told me he kept "it's little peter" as a trophy for my wife.

I trapped in the 80's when furs where worth anything, paid for a boat, motor, and trailer in one winter, that is before PETA. I have caught both Mink and Weasels and you do have a mink…
