 I'm hooked

Spent the last three days in the woods and saw plenty of deer. I could have taken all them with a gun, but the shot was either too far or too obstructed for a bow. I don't have any desire to hunt with my rifle now, I'm hooked on the bow. This sickness seems deadlier than the Black Rifle Disease, does it ever go away?

Sounds like you had a great time. Even though I hunt with a firearm or muzzleloader when those seasons are in, I still prefer bow season over any other. A person just learns so much more about deer mannerisms while carrying a bow. While waiting for deer to move within range and offer a clear shot, you get to see them interact with each other. On the other hand, while gun hunting you usually shoot them pretty quickly, and don't get the opportunity to observe all of their habits.

When carrying a bow, I just feel more in tune with the deer and with our ancestors who hunted with bows.

Uh, no it just grows from exciting, to a passion to an obsession.

Glad you had fun
5 days and counting here. By Wed I won't be able to sleep.

Not if your lucky.

I have always been a hunter, but as the years have gone by I've found that gun hunting just doesn't provide the enjoyment for me that bow hunting does. I find bow hunting more of a challenge, therefore I find it more rewarding. That is not a knock against gun hunting at all, I've just become less interested in results, and more interested in the experience.

With bow hunting, I HAVE to pay attention to every little detail. I have to control every movement and every sound. Bowhunting is not forgiving. When you are within feet of a deer(or any wild animal), you have to be on top of your game. I can really get into that and away from the stresses of everyday life.

I get some of my best sleep in a deer stand. Probably would get more if the deer didn't keep waking me up.

White tail starts Oct 1st here. I'm stoked. Went out this past weekend to the UP to help buddies of mine bait for bear which starts Sept 10th for them.

Its a lot worse. (for me anyway)

I enjoy gun season, but mostly because we have a "gun camp" that I go to with some other guys and its more of a hunting/bonding time. Plus that first day is crazy!

But bow is where the real fun is––you get that (mostly) unpressured behavior, and I just don't feel the urgency like I do when I haven't seen anything by 8:00 am opening gun morning...

You do learn a lot more about deer behavior using a bow that transfers into your gun hunting. Probably not just because it's more challenging, but because it get you in the woods an extra month.

OP - This is my fifth year with the bow, and I'll still hunt with the gun but nothing satisfies like bow season before the guns start going off.

Spent all day in the stand yesterday. Four deer in range, two in the clear, but facing me, one turned her head right at me when I was about to draw and moved behind some junk. Saw three other deer way out of range during the mid morning.
7 deer from the stand on the first day out on public land.

Awesome day. Didn't get a shot off, but it took the edge off just about perfect.

Pretty much going to wait until early-mid October to get out again so I'm not tempted to burn my any deer tags on doe.

Good luck to you this season!!!!
