i was getting ready to leave my little fishing spot and had pulled in my other line when this pole bent over. i had caught a few 5-9lb cats earlier and thought i'd gotten lucky one more time. then it started stripping line from my reel!

anyway, after the cliché fight, i finally landed this sweetheart. 29lbs. 12oz!! on a cheapo walmart rod/reel and 17lb test line.

when i got him on the bank and grabbed the leader, the hook bent/ pulled out. so, in a fit of panic, i grabbed him and tossed him farther up the bank to make sure he didn't get away.

the catch of a lifetime for me!!

thanks, osprey.

almost a week later, i'm still stoked about that guy. is that how it is for folks? you catch your best and then spend the rest of your life working on the next?

Yep, that's pretty much how it is.

While not fresh water - I caught this 97# black grouper many years ago and have been trying to best it ever since.

NIce cat, if you want to catch a larger one start using hand sized blue gill for bait. Fish at night on the correct lunar phase and get a heavier rod. There are some monster cats in Oklahoma. 70+ lbs Blues and Flat heads.

Nice fish.

For some people it is always about the next fish, others it is the fight, others it is all just for the excuse to drink beer somewhere other than in front of the TV.

Damn nice cat there, this is why I use 12 Lb test on all my Reels, we trolled one time, made 3 passes and caught a 4 Lb Largemouth, 1.5 Lb Crappie and on the 3rd pass caught a 14 Lb Channel Cat and this Lake is known for huge Flat Heads and big Pike and Saugeye so I go with the 12 Lb Test line on every Reel.
