Rod/Reel weight advice

I caught my first snook on fly last night. We were fishing the snook lights and I used a pinfish-looking fly.
The snook was only 24", but it was giving me a hard time with my 6wt basic rod/reel setup.
Would an 8wt suite me fine? Or should I go with a 9wt? This will be only used for snook (or whatever) at the lights, and maybe the occasional schooling mackerel/jack/ladyfish (all inshore).

If you don't have to deal with mangroves an 8 wt will handle most snook well. The bigger fish will still leave you wanting for a 9 wt.
