 Solar Ovens/Sun Ovens

So I went to the AZ surival show yesterday and really studied the two solar cookers on the market. The Sun Oven and the Solar Oven Society Model. I am leaning towards the SOS because of costs and what it comes with, but am concerned about durability, longevity etc, so I am looking for feedback.

The Sun Oven Brand seems nice but is $260 just for the oven
The SOS brand seems fine too, and is $200 with the oven, pots and water pastuerization indicator. It seems a bit bigger as it can take 2 10" pots at once. Being in AZ I may not need the reflector and I can get the SOS model for $170 without it.

Anyone have experience with these, or feedback?

Build one out of cardboard and aluminum foil for grins.
You might buy a commercial unit down the road but you'll understand the principles and geometry required.

Chef Douglas Morris sells them. He's a member here. I'm sure he'd have some excellent input.

This. My brother built one. It runs up to 250 deg quickly. He is in Mexico and uses it fairly often when away from home to heat food. He told me he has burned a few things by not pulling it out in time. I'm sure he'll pick a comercial built one. When he does, he has already learned the basics with propperly running one.

I was gonna build one out of fiberglass using a wooden mold and paraffin, plexiglass ––
just wasn't comfortable with any toxic issues.....
they can be made out of cardboard and foil, but I wanted something durable

went with the SOS for the reasons stated above.
I don't need the reflectors, so it is quite solid.
it is possible that the SOS doesn't get as hot as the other,
but I have gotten it to 250ish and cooked my stored beans, rice,
also made spareribs, meatloaf, chicken, potatoes, etc
all with the sun, no fuel, and no wafting odors to temp the neighbors

I've played with my Sun Oven. Not much mind you, I cooked some chicken, baked some cookies, etc. It heated to over 300 degrees on a Sunny winter day in the 50s. I could see where on a marginal day the Sun Oven would possibly allow you to heat effectively where less efficient units wouldn't get up to a good temp. That's more important to me because we have frequent cloud cover in the Summer.

sun oven will consistantly hit 325 with minimal practice..
Sun ove will hit 250 in a snow bank on a cloudy day..with out any effort.

I have sold several, no one has been unhappy with the purchase..

Agreed, I have heard good things about the Sun Oven brand unit, I am just curious if it is really worth 25-30% more then the SOS model?

Loooked at the SOS Model breifly. looks like a plastic box with glass lid on it.
If thats the case, you can cook in your car in the summer time, not so much in the winter.
is there insulation? will it stay hot when a cloud passes by or do you lose heat?

while a black box with glass on it will get hot. will it hit 300 to 400 degress in a short amount of time and keep that heat for 45 min to an hour with minimal
attention for bread, cake, pie baking: OR in SHTF, Hurry we need to eat situation?
can you move it with out spilling contents. ie Rocker shelf found in the Sun OVen.

the SUn Oven seems a better box for the money..thats what I found and why I rep them.
I saw fold ups, mylar, plastic, glass, flimsy, injection molded and all kids of styles, but SUn oven is a peice of equipment some kid isnt going to stip on and destroy.it safer
cleaner and far better build than 5 others I looked at..

IF I can help IM me.

I went with the SOS as I read too many reviews about bad plastic taste with the solar oven.

I jumped in on the Sun Oven group buy that Chef organized. I've had mine for nearly a year and I'm very pleased with it.

Like all my other preps it's peace of mind to have a way to prepare a hot meal in the event the power goes out.

Chef, Thnx for the good info...I have been thinking on this for awhile, wondering if I could justify the cost as oppose to trying to make one or go with a cheaper one.

Any ideas if there may be another group buy in the future?

Cool discussion. The idea is so obvious, I'd never even thought of it. I do a lot of slow cooking, and plan on moving someplace sunny, so this looks to be a great way to go.

I'd be in for another group buy for a Sun Oven! (hint-hint)

It doesn't have a richer plate but I believe the SOS is insulated. The space between the interior and exterior wall did not sound hollow. If you are going to run a group buy and the price is okay, I would be interested in learning more.
