 bats in my house,,,SOB

it started last monday night. 9pm one flew through my room while at the computer. i figured Ok it chased a bug in some how, no problem. scooped him up in a box and out the door. wedsday night, a small bat comes fluttering through. hitting the walls and crashing to the floor only to get up and try again. not good! babies!!!! so I know something is up.
thursday at work I called the batman to see what he has to say, he's tells me there could be a problem if I'm seeing babies,,,
thursday afternoon come home and find mangled bat in bathroom sink, one of my bengel cats got ahold of it and give it a new A-hole sink was covered in blood and the bat had just a little kick left in it but it was on its way out checked cats out and they are fine!

thursday night batman shows up and we look for in/out route and find it at the peak of the house. its dusk and we are watching and counting how many come out. inside of an hour I counted 50+ and he come up close to that. not good!!
we go in the house and narrow it down to one room that they are come into house in... my damn bedroom so we break out the sealer and start sealing up every crack 1/4" or bigger.

I feel better now but I ain't sleeping in that damn room tonight. I discovered that the $600 couch in the living room is a total POS for sleeping no sleep and every single noise I heard that night had to be checked out!!

after no sleep I get up friday and check out bedroom and nothing, maybe we got it sealed up,, I hope! off to work. called home at lunch and all is a ok! come home friday night and all is good. dusk moves in and I'm watching the outside in/out route and still get the willies seeing all those bats coming out.

about 1030pm I'm thinking damn I'm tired so I give the bedroom another look and find nothing I think we got it! so hit the shower and a few beers and off to bed. its about 1210am saturday now, just pulled the covers back and crap one flutters up from the floor next to the bed. I grab a small box and give chase, its a baby! ten seconds into the chase and I find myself face down on the floor looking at the dog who is looking at me dive bomber at 12:00 full grown flying hairy rat! tossed dog out the door and I followed closing the door. go down stairs and find another baby crawling on the floor in dinning room. scooped it up and out the door.

1am saturday. battle gear! yes full leathers and helmet! going to war! back to bedroom, open door and see dive bomber on the ceiling. his nasty hairy ass sittin there laughing at me. everytime I get close to it with a box it starts flying around. after about 15 minutes it gettin hot in my battle gear. leave room and remove helmet. I start hearing something halfway down the stairs. the baby must have got by me, scooped up and out the door.
back to bedroom. new idea. open window and get it to start flying and it should find the open window. sounds good to me! 330am after chasing this little **** it just won't go out the damn window . it just wants to hang and sleep, it is aware now that something is chasing it and reacts to every noise and movement in the room. just cracking the door, it snaps its head around and looks dead at me. I must be in some cheap B flick from the 80's I 'm thinkin at this point. I'm done for the night and have not slept since thursday..
I will call the batman saturday morning and thats that.

of coarse I barely slept at all last night. again every noise I heard was like someone breaking into my house and had to be checked out. but nothing thank god!
get up this morning and go to see if I could give it one more shot to catch the sucker and its nowhere to be found. batman is coming and we will tear the room apart and finish sealing up the room.

estimate to seal up roof and house is coming this week. I don't expect it to be cheap! at this point in time I don't care, maybe 4-5 hours sleep since wensday-thursday. I will burn this house down If I need to LOL!!!

FYI, bats can squeeze through insanely tight spaces. Some can fit through holes that are approximately 1/2" x 1". Start by sealing all penetrations through your interior ceilings and walls. Then check all your windows and doors.

Put the cats in the attic and maybe get a few more.

Also, find a new pest/rodent control guy. A real one, that gets rid of the problem.

The recommendations for rabies post exposure prophylaxsis includes when a bat is found in a room where a person has been sleeping. You want to be mighty careful, especially if you have kids.

Screw that!

Wait till dark, bug bomb the whole fucking house and attic. Get a motel room, come back at 4 am and seal that shit up and wait outside with a shotgun.

Probably not legal. But, certainly the right thing to do.

THIS one of the FD's i work at had to PAY someone to come get rid of there bats. they were a protected species and had to be removed alive. one thing to do is try and build a couple of "bat boxes" and hang them outside on some trees. bats are great for flying insect control and are usually welcome by most people, well, as long as they are outside. LOL.

Find someone who knows how to get rid of them. We hired a guy to set up screens and seal holes in our cabin my folks own. So far we have had very few bats.

yeah working with a bat guy now but not having a winter has got all these guy here in SC busy as hell. DNR told me that killing is a no no and fines are high. they said normally bat babies start flying around july-aug. we are seeing flying babies now so they never left for the winter or they never hiburnated and just kept reproducing.

If if were you I'd go get some HRIG and start rabies post exposure prophylaxis just to be on the safe side. Rabies is no joke, and you can be bitten by a bat in your sleep and not even know it. If you are exposed to a rbid bat without knowing it once you start to show symptoms you are already dead...

Protected or not, they're gonna screw up your house and there's the whole rabies thing.

Mothball (lots o' mothballs) the attic and install fluorescent shop lights (the 4ft length). Low power use, no heat/fires to worry about.

We have a Bat Man Member. He should know what to do!

Will prolly advise you to whack them with a flashlight.

well after an all day hunt for the missing bat from last night. it showed up again in the same spot where I left it. man they can hide. that room was trashed 5-6 times today looking for it. but I did change the way I was trying to handle it from last night. I took a broom to his ass, knocked him out and tosed his ass out.

no more kid gloves. if its in the house it dies, or at least get knocked out if its lucky.
will get roofers and batman together to work this out. now would be a good time to get the roof redone as it does need it. then start the cover up all the holes in the roof.

while at first this sounds good, its not. if you kill the bats in the attic and walls and can't get them out they will rot and stink the place up...

Well if you have been around the forum a while, you know I've pretty much seen and done it all in my lifetime, but this one definitely is in the Tj hasn't had bats in his belfry.

I've had birds, snakes, swarms of insects, skunks, we're fighting off racoons now, but I've not had bats.

I totally enjoyed your story.

My uncle had bats in his house last year. They were not getting into living spaces at all and were noticed leaving the house one evening as it started to get dark.

We watched for a couple nights and did some reading and one night after they left we put up a bit of window type screen, the old metal kind that is actually kind of heavy duty compared to today's junk, and since we had watched for where they entered and exited and checked things out during the day for a few days we actually got all holes at once.

If your house needs a roof I would do it since the noise actually should help drive them off and it is the best time to seal things up.

The screen was a partial short term fix until my uncle got a metal roof put on later that year. The roofers fixed a few things and did things in such a way the screen was not really needed in most spots at all and where it might have been needed it was redone to fit the new roof and gutters and what not.

I do like bats for eating all the bugs, plus I like watching them in the evenings. But I sure the heck would not want them in my living spaces.

Supposedly if you use screen use a stiff gage, you staple it at the top and leave it open at the bottom. This allows them to get out but not get back in so you don't end up with a bunch of dead ones rotting up there.

By the way, this isn't you is it?

Yet, there are still those with some common sense.

You don't want them in the house, but you don't want to kill them either. One bat can eat up to several times its own weight in insects in one night.
Typically the way to approach it is:

1) Prevent them from getting inside.

2) Wait until they leave to hunt at dusk and seal up all external holes so they can't get back in. Although to be entirely effective, you may need to wait until the pups are old enough to fly.

They'll find somewhere else to go. It might not hurt to put up some bat houses, they're good to have around, just not quite that intimate.
