Do not trust over sea antibotics - where to get fish, bird, other animal meds AND which ones to get
Harvest123  [Member]

A friend suggested ordering overseas for antibotics to stock for BOB, and I got RIPPED OFF. Nothing was sent.

What meds do you suggest getting and where do you order them from as far as bird and fish and other animals?

On occasion meds sent from an overseas source will be intercepted by customs and not be forwarded to the intended receipient. Usually a warning letter of some sort will arrive in place of the expected meds....

No warning letter, and I had a prescription for the meds. My uncle is a dentist and he can write the prescriptions. However, they seem to cost less via the vet - or so I was told.

I hope your fish are ok - I'd be VERY upset if someone ripped me off and my fish didn't get the antibiotics they deserved!

Considering you could have your doctor write you a prescription and get them for $4 at walmart, buying fish medications or getting them from overseas seems sort of silly.

In any case, a lot of drugs are now made overseas. There is no way I am aware of to know just what the country of origin is.

So you can just ask your doc for a 100 cipro and 100 amoxicillian and 100 cephalexin and he's cool with giving you that?
My doctor would laugh and send me home and say take two aspirin.
Michael Jacksons doctor seemed to be good about giving out meds to his patients also.
Seriously I doubt my doc or most will just write out a perscription for something you want.

If you went in and asked for narcotics, you won't get them.

If you go in and tell him the truth, especially if you live in a remote area, or do remote trips, you will likely be able to make a good case.

I know people who have done this around here and it has not been an especially hard sell. It is not just for SHTF things either. Some people get regular infections and doctors give them a prescription so they have the stuff on hand when the infection starts back up again.

Narcotics - no. Antibiotics, maybe. I suspect it depends a lot on how nutty you sound when you ask about it.

My uncle is a Dentist, but he actually recommended getting Cipro from an over seas pharmacy b/c I had no insurance. He has given me other antibiotics from samples he gets, and i rotate them out as the date goes out. He is with me in this and know I am simply being prepared.

About Wal-mart and $4 perscriptions - they have some, but try buying a z pack, Cipro, etc. They cost a ton. Not being a smart ass, it just is true.

No doubt. My sister is a pharmacist and I have discussed this with her at length. She said a good rule of thumb is a prescription med loses 5% of its strength starting two years after the expiration date. They will be good for a long while. You just may have to take more. Vitamins, OTOH, can morph into some bad stuff depending on what type of vitamins.

I follow the study the military did on meds. Most meds keep the majority of their potentency for 5 years if stored correctly. After 5 years, they go.

They did the study about 10 years ago (that is a big approximation - not sure when), they changed their rotation out from 2 years on most meds to 5 years - as I understood the study.

Rotation is important because degredation is a bit of a rrandom event. Some meds stay good for a LONG time and others are useless in a month if not stored correctly.

All this being said, I was talking about meds from an animal supply. I appreciate the help.

Agreed, but, at least for z-pak's, there are other things that cover the same bugs. Ie, amoxicillin instead for strep, a half a dozen different drugs for pneumonia, etc. You might actually have to take them for 10 days instead of 5, but if the SHTF for real, you'll have lots of down time w/ no TV to watch or ARFCOM to read.

http://www.healthwarehouse.com/azithromycin-250mg-tablets-6-tablet-pack.html

About $1 per 250 mg dose.
Actually cheaper to take two 250s than one 500.

pretty cheap, but not amoxil/PCN cheap.

For comparison, when introduced in the 90's, Zithromax was about $20 per pill.

I think the purpose here is to be prepared for the future. I dont know a single doctor that would prescribe me a couple hundred pills of Cipro or Tetracycline for SHTF purposes.

Mine did and gave a scrip for some Hydrocodone as well. If they know you and know your not a seeker then there should be no problem. Just be ready to articulate your need for what you ask for.

The thing to keep in mind about antibiotics is there is a lot of pressure on doctors to not prescribe them at all. Everyone going in with a cough has been demanding them for years, now we have superbugs going around. I would be really surprised of a doctor just writing scripts in bulk.

What types are you guys getting for your fish? I have 3 fish tanks and I would hate for them to suffer in SHTF. Amox, cephalexin and penicillin?

Wanting to be sure I had the most options for protecting my, ah, fish, I got amoxicillin, cephalexin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, and metronidazole (flagyl) from here. This place has some additional options like azithromycin and levofloxacin for those who want to expand the protection of their fish. Note that ordering from them has some additional complications. There was a thread on this in the Survival Forum a few weeks ago.

I put a bottle of Fish Mox in my Amazon cart last night, then went back to complete my order this morning and not only was my cart emptied (not 'empty', emptIED) and all of the fish antibiotics (literally hundreds of products) had disappeared from the site. Overnight. I contacted customer servive, and they verified that the products were gone, but couldn't give me an explanation/reason.

You might want to change your Amazon password if you haven't already.

It sounds like a database glitch on their end though.

It's the same stuff, like the EXACT SAME stuff you get at Walgreens. India and Mexico make a significant fraction of the meds imported into the US, have for years.

The only difference is the bottle, and the requirement to get a script. Oh, and the price. (People have been buying over the counter meds from Mexico to bring back for a fraction of the price and no script for many years no problem. Haven't you seen the sob stories we must have socialized healthcare local tv news stories about some grandma that can't get to Mexico to get her cheap meds anymore? They come around here about once a year with them on slow news days.

Nope––just tried. I was on the line with cust svc for awhile yesterday about this––there are no fish antibiotics on their site that either she or I could see.

If you get a chance, please try searching and let me know what you find as well––I'm very interested to see if it's just me.

Nope, not the same search results as were originally there.

As I posted before, when I first searched amazon, I got all the same products as those listed by calvet supply and the other sites mentioned above. Now the only things listed on amazon are the ones your link shows. All of the fish cipro, amox, pennicillin, etc. are gone.
