Hurricane Preps
I just would like to know where i can get a good deal on MRE's?
i would like some just in case.
What do you guys recommend on this.
Alot of votes for armygear.net on here. I have never personally ordered from them, but everyone seems to say they are GTG. I have a local supplier when I need them.
mredepot- beats me if they have any in stock or not.
emergency essentials- they stock a civvy version of MRE's. seem to be a popular choice.
or search the EE here on ARFcom. Your results may vary.
I have no experience with any of the above. Just repeating the common recommendations I often see here.
cool thanks

Straight from the manufacturer.
You can order by the pouch or by the case.
I highly recommend them.
Go to your local neighbor hood supermarket and get canned and shelf stable food. MREs are just canned food with an alumininized plastic pouch. You can pick and choose what you want to eat. Many people buy MREs and open the pouch and precede to discard things that they don't like to eat, the problem you paid for this stuff already.
Also canned food is also vermin resistant. Rats, mice etc can gnaw through the aluminized MRE pouches.

what he said...
seriously, MRES are just over priced non-perishable grocewry store food, heck most of them have packs of M&M and other name brand stuff and the shelf life is about the same. most canned goods are good for 2-3 years till expiration date and then another 2-3 years past that date if stored in a cool location, basically the same time line for MREs but youre getting them at a FRACTION of the cost. plus you dont have to look all crazy when your friends and neighbors visit you. When people ask why i have a overflowing pantry i dont tell them im a prepper, i just say cosco was running some crazy sales and i decided to stock up! and they always reply "thats a good idea i should do that too"

I've got two Cat IIIs under my belt now and I gotta agree with this guy.
My hurricane food was canned ravioli. It had a lot of calories, had a pop-top and was easy to heat up.
If you're just preparing for a hurricane, you'll be fine with stuff in the grocery store.
grocery stores, dollar stores and the such are where we get our stuff. i doubt my kids would like MRE's so we stock canned goods in a rubbermaid container. i keep mtn house items for myself and the wife for our 72h bags. we are both required to report to work no matter what so the RM container is for the kids mostly since we will have to drop them off at my mothers.

okay
to add to the ravoli suggested by Johnny_Reno.....a some lift ring fruit cocktail cups....instant cocoa, Crystal Lite and GatorAde dry mix...
figure out how you will decontaminate water over long term if necessary (I use a Sawyer filter + Clorox) store enough for at least 3 days ... the easiest is to get a 5gal water cooler bottle (or a couple) and a hand pump
some things I use thru lessons learned since 1955 living on the central Gulf coast
I converted from Coleman/white gas to propane for cooking....adapter to fill 1# bottles from bulk and bulk transfer line... I keep 3 25# bottles on hand
LED headlamp (handsfree) for the adults, plus task light (put a clip or ring on it so you'll have it with you) small whistle and light for kids if they are old enough
try to standardize batteries (I use Sanyo AA eneloops and Ds)
a couple of battery operated fans so you can sleep
a way to solar heat your hot water, I use a small dedicated pump up sprayer for shower
33 gallon trash can in the shower filled with water to flush toilet (directly into bowl... try this empty first)
small digital portable TV with 12v cigarette plug capability
weather radio with SAME warning...portable radio for entertainment and news
couple of 5 day ice chests...freeze 1 gallon jugs of water... one for ice, one for food... move cold cuts etc to the ice chest if you have ice, so you will not have to open the door for the first power out meal
Dietz kero lanterns or LEDs if you prefer for area light
non portable phone in case land line still works... 12v charger for cell phone or other USB appliances
upgrade the first aid kit.... my county does not respont with a high wind load EMT units with winds above 40mph... EMT will responde in lower profile Sheriff cars
sandals to wear in the house to let your feet dry.... good poncho if you must go out... hard hat
if you have specific questions.. I've been through a couple also
BTW: I've also read on ARFCOM, that true mil-spec'd MREs can survived being air dropped, but I don't plan to air drop my food anytime soon.
MREs are way over-rated at least for civilian use. They are meant to simplify the military's life by having everything in place at one time, so that all you have to do is pass it out. I am not totally against MREs, because I have a case of that stuff laying around for the initial emergency when you don't have time to prepare anything; you just pop your food into the MRE heater, pour in some water, piss, etc and in in 30 minutes you have pipping hot meal.

Give ALDI a peek if you have them down there-good quality canned goods and amazingly low prices....
