My first Elk Hunt...Leaving Thurs
I am going on my first Elk Hunt...leaving this Thurs and will meet my hunting buddies (with lots of Elk experience) at the trailhead on Friday. Weminuche Wilderness Colorado.
I have 2 apprehensions...
1)the 4 hour horse ride up the mountain (I have been on a horse less than 30 minutes my whole life)
2)I am fighting a bruiser of a cold...have antibiotics to stave off sinus infection.
Using a Weatherby Stainless Walnut Vanguard in 30-06...180gr Black Hills Barnes Triple Shock. Leupold 6x42 FX2 scope.
Hope to get some good pics, and an Elk of Course
Any advice would be appreciated.

I was about to call hogwash on that but then realized we got a Texan with a cold coming to high altitude. Stay away from the booze. You'll go down in a hurry.
What's my advice? Have an awesome time!
I wouldn't worry about the horse ride, the horses know what to do.
Your biggest worry should be the altitude,be carefull about that.
Oh,and heed the advice about avoiding alcohol, especially with a cold, unless of course you WANT to give alcohol poisoning a try this year................

Yep stay away from the beer. To heavy to pack enough on horses to last 5 days. Stick with Jack Daniels.
Remember to hunt slow! A few steps stop use your periferal vision. Use your ears and your nose. If the wind is right you can catch wind of elk in the dark timber a pretty good ways. North slopes are a good place to look to find elk in the dark timber. Look to trails working around the mountain near the top of the mountain. Also if you jump a bull and he starts to run hit a cow call, or you can make a bs try with your mouth and they might stop. Last years bull, and this years bull I jumped and they stopped dead in their tracks with a cow call.
Have a good hunt and good luck.
Guess he didn't make it back yet?

Stay in the woods all day long. bring food.
Long hikes make you tired not more successfull.
Walk slow look all around.
Stay in the woods all day.
Stay in the woods all day. I have many animals under my belt
and most have been shot in the afternoon.
Bury some tobacco on your way into the woods - does anybody else do this?
