Yaesu FT-100D or Yaesu FT-857D?
For a base station that can be slapped on a backpack for field day.
My initial research shows there is one little con and one big con for the -100.
Little: It runs twice the amps in standby/receive that the 857d runs
Big: When it comes to used they cost the same.
But reviewers seem to prefer the display and less menu-itis of the -100. I've only seen the 857d briefly in person and have not seen the -100 in person at all. And I haven't used either one.
I like my 857.. am continually pleasantly surprised by this radio.
If you have plans for digital, I'd evaluate those options before making a decision. have had limited success with digital modes with the 857...but, am new to digital, so it might be me... unlikley, but possible....
FYI the finals are "unobtainium" on the FT-100D. I would opt for the FT-857 as it is still in production and parts are still available.

Ok, that's the type of info that makes a difference

I have both. Like them both (other than like mentioned above-the finals are a no-go and my UHF went kaput on mine). Other than that, they are both great radios. 857d is cheaper to seperate the head (as in homebrew it) where the 100D isn't. Digital is working ok so far on 857 and haven't plugged it up to the 100d to verify that.

There you go... just have to go there...

( Mndless, Todays just not your day.)
Danpass, I have a 857D and I just love it. I picked it as I wanted something that I could put in my truck as a mobile rig when I get one that is more suited as a base. I felt that the 857D was the most bang for the buck. Sure, the menu driven system can be a pain, but I've found that once you have everything setup the way you like it, you won't be making that many changes. As for the
digital modes, I've have had no problems setting it up for them. (Sorry Mndless) Most of my contacts that I make are on the digital modes. I'm sure that which ever one that you pick, they will do a fine job for you.

Go for the 857! I have also been told that the 100 is deaf compared to the 857 (no personal experience, just info a fellow ham in my club has shared in the past). Of course, Dayton is just a couple months away...
Just for the record... I hate u guys...
This means I have to keep working on this, great... just freek'n great...
Like I said... hate u guys...

The ALC Meter is your friend?
Ft-857D! Best radio for the money. Think about getting an optional Collins filter if you plan to use it as a base station with a good antenna.

+ 1000
Bob is right
If you blow the finals on a FT-100, it's over.
I own two 857Ds, and have had great luck.

If you do, don't get the 2.3kHz, get the INRAD 2.0kHz #720

blank circuit board from radio shack, a length of CAT5 cable, some metal pins along with solder and iron and some way to cut the board(dremel). you cut the circuit board to fit over the pin board on the radio and face plate and large enough so you can use the screw holes on both. cut the board to fit, mark where your pins need to be, install them on the board(need to get a little creative on that bit) then solder your CAT5 cables to that. you need to remember the color so you get the correct wire to the correct pin. there is a writeup somewhere on the web but i lost the link when my old PC crashed.
