APRS: Good fun or OPSEC fail?
Been thinking about getting one of the Kenwod or yaesu HTs' with it all bulit in, but not sure about having my location broadcast. What say ye? I did look through all 14 pages of threads, if this is a dupe at least I tried.
If you have a cell phone and it is turned on, you are already making your location available to folks you may not always want to have it.
With APRS you would actually be more fully in control, able to turn it on & off as desired.
I wouldn't be worried, id be more worried about breaking super expensive radio that I have clipped to my belt.
You dont have to have it beacon in your driveway all the time. And most radios have a built in ambiguity setting so it does not pinpoint your location.
All good points and helpful info, thanks. I do keep all location services off in my phone.

Still doesn't matter when you get down to it. The towers you connect to all have an individual MAC address. Thats how services like the new Motorola Razr adapt to your surroundings without gps or wifi. ie the new Razr will change your ringer to silent if it recognizes your using towers near your work or turn wifi on if your using a tower near your house. This is also how Google maps works without gps
I have the VX8 and it is a pain to use on aprs. Look at the kenwood. It is much better set up for aprs.
just turn it off......
I'm still wanting to get an APRS mobile rig when I get my new truck

Good to know, thanks.
Also the vx8 is delicate and prone to breaking from being dropped.
